Tough Fifth Inning

A tough fifth inning for Biola allowed Dominican to get ahead and stay ahead in the Eagles eventual 7-6 loss.

LA MIRADA---The Biola softball team had a tough fifth inning where Dominican was able to get ahead and ultimately stay ahead. The Eagles faced some deja vu in the seventh inning, coming up just one run short again in their 7-6 loss.

Dominican broke the second game stalemate by scoring five runs in the fifth inning and then scored two more in the sixth to jump ahead with a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles regrouped in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. Colby McClinton led off with a single and then Allie Beck singled to give Biola two baserunners. A Penguin error allowed the Eagles to get the bases loaded and two outs later, Alexis Lara tripled to clear the bases.

BU held Dominican scoreless in the top of the seventh and then went straight to work in their next at-bats. The Eagles strung together three runs in the bottom of the seventh which left them one shy of Dominican in their 7-6 loss.

Biola scored their three runs off four hits and two Penguin errors. Jennifer Morinishi, Beck, Abie Nowak, and Rilee Ruvalcaba contributed hits in an exciting inning for the Eagles.

Kayla Bousquette started the game for the Eagles, throwing 4.2 innings until Raylene Roybal came in to close. Roybal struck out four batters in 2.1 innings of work. The redshirt-Junior recorded strikeouts looking for all three outs of the top of the sixth.

Biola falls 27-20 overall and 19-11 in the PacWest, but will get a clean slate in the PacWest Championships next week. The Eagles (No. 2 seed) face Azusa Pacific (No. 3 seed) in the first round of the first annual conference championships on Wednesday, May 3 at 5 p.m. at Freedom Field.
