Eagles Secure Victory over Cougars

The softball team shutout Azusa Pacific 1-0 in their first round of the PacWest Championships at Freedom Field.

LA MIRADA---The Biola Softball team shutout Azusa Pacific 1-0 in the first round of the PacWest Softball Championships.

"Today's game was tough, which we knew it would be," commented head coach Kristin Halte. "APU has a great team and obviously a great pitcher. We knew it was going to be a dog fight where we had to play our best softball to pull off a win today."

The Eagles scored their run in the fourth inning and then held the Cougars 1-0. In the top of the fourth, Abie Nowak worked her way on base where she benefited off a Cougar error. Paige Gonzales pinch ran for Nowak, giving the Eagles some speed on the basepath. Gonzales advanced to second off a wild pitch and was pushed to third by Raylene Roybal who hit a deep fly into right field territory that allowed Gonzales to tag up and get over to third.

Next up, was senior Alexis Lara with two outs. Lara clutched up big time with a base knock up the middle that allowed Gonzales to score and put Biola ahead 1-0.

Lara reflected, "During my at bat I was focused on hitting it up the middle and as soon as I saw it hit the ground I was excited."

Raylene Roybal pitched an incredible game in the circle, efficiently holding APU scoreless and threw three 1-2-3 innings.

Roybal trusted her defense and forced Azusa Pacific into 12 groundouts and eight flyouts while striking out one.

Roybal reflected, "Today I kept my composure and trusted my defense to pick me up."

The Eagles will advance in the winner's bracket and play No.1 seed CUI at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Freedom Field. The winner of the 11 a.m. game will advance to the championship and the loser will play the winner of Azusa Pacific and Hawai'i Pacific at 5 p.m.
