To the Finals

A semifinals win over Fresno Pacific advanced the Eagles to the WWPA Championship game on Sunday.

O'FALLON, Ill. --- An all west semifinals featured the top-seeded Eagles against the third-seeded Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. The final game of the day was a low-scoring affair, allowing the BU defense to shine. Biola was triumphant, 7-3, to advance in the WWPA Tournament and earn a spot in the championship game on Sunday.

In just its second year as a program, Biola women's water polo advanced to the conference finals with a win on Saturday. Defense led the way, holding the Sunbirds to three goals on the day.

Neither team started fast on the attack in the semifinal matchup. The last game of the day featured zero goals in the first quarter. Samantha Rainey kept FPU off the scoreboard with a pair of saves, while the Eagle defense survived three FPU powerplays.

As the second period began, BU won its second-straight sprint and let the shots fly. Five shots came through within the first two minutes and 20 seconds with the fifth cashing in. Marija Mijuskovic finally broke the drought with the help of Ava LoBue.

It took over ten minutes but the Eagles had the 1-0 lead and were not looking back. Shortly after moving ahead, Mijuskovic and LoBue switched places for a goal from LoBue and an assist from Mijuskovic. The scoring continued with a goal from Kourtney Pyle, creating a 3-0 edge for BU.

Before the halftime break, Fresno Pacific pulled back within reach with a penalty shot and an even strength goal. The Sunbirds ended their scoreless streak of 14 and a half minutes and came within one at the halfway point.

Mattie Herzog quickly gave the Eagles some breathing room at the jump of the third quarter. Veralie Naranjo set up her teammate, as Biola scored on its first possession of the second half. Naranjo got a goal of her own two minutes later, extending the lead to 5-2.

Biola secured the win with another stellar defensive showing. Through the final quarter the BU defense held the Sunbirds to zero goals and four turnovers, while landing one save and two field blocks.

The Biola offense was balanced with five goal scorers for the team's seven goals. Rachel Spadt facilitated the day with three assists.

On Sunday, the Eagles are set to face off against the fourth seed out of the west in CSU Monterey Bay. BU went 2-0 against the Otters in the regular season and will face CSUMB at 11:15 am on Sunday with the WWPA Championship on the line.
