Anderson Shuts the Door

A four-run sixth helped the Eagles take down Concordia, as Jake Anderson secured the lead on the mound.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Relief pitching highlighted the day, as Biola grabbed a 6-4 win over Concordia (15-22, 10-14 PacWest) on Friday. The Eagles (16-23, 10-11 PacWest) kicked off their doubleheader on the road at CUI with a game one victory behind 5.1 innings from a pair of BU relievers who did not give up a run

Through five frames, the hosting Golden Eagles held the slight edge. CUI piled on three unearned runs in the fourth and a single run in the third for a 4-2 advantage.

Gilbert Lopez was handed the ball in the fourth and fought through three hits and a walk to give up zero runs of his own. The middle reliever picked up the win thanks to a major rally from the Eagles.

In the sixth, Biola landed a pair of RBI doubles for a game-changing at bat. Taylor Justus was first in line, scoring James Whitman with a two-base hit to center field.

An intentional walk to Oscar Serratos came later in the frame, loading the bases for BU. Gavin Ayers stepped in with two outs and gave the Eagles the lead. The outfielder shot the ball down the left field line, moving everyone around the bases. With Serratos' speed at first, all three runners scored for BU, giving the team a 6-4 lead.

Jake Anderson did the rest. Anderson entered in the seventh and was excellent on the mound. He protected the BU lead for his third save with three scoreless innings of work and only one hit allowed.

The biggest play of the day actually came in the bottom of the first inning. CUI loaded the bases and launched the ball with a trajectory to leave the field for a grand slam. Serratos denied their big hit with a robbery over the wall, ousting the batter and ending the inning.

Early rallies featured good baserunning and solid contact for the Eagles. The first lead of the day belonged to BU with three-straight hits from the middle of the lineup. James Whitman kicked it off with a single, before a Noah Ruiz double and Sam Lisiak single scored Whitman for a 1-0 lead.

Lisiak's RBI single brought home the lone run of the second inning but the bats kept it going in the third. Ayers led off the frame with a single to left field and stole second to move into scoring position. AJ Ortiz delivered from the cleanup spot in the lineup, grabbing a single and bringing home BU's second run of the day.

The Eagles will face CUI in game two later in the evening on Friday to wrap up the doubleheader.
