Late Game Rally but no Dice

The softball team rallied in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Penguins who eventually won 8-4.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola softball team strung together three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was enough to overcome Dominican who ended up winning 8-4 at Freedom Field.

Dominican (7-6 overall, 3-0 PacWest Conference) scored two runs again in the second inning, but this time around Biola (16-7, 9-3 PacWest) was able to cut the Penguins lead in half in the top of the third.

Colby McClinton singled to score Rilee Ruvalcaba which made it a one-run ballgame, 2-1.

BU held Dominican scoreless in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, but the Penguins would have a breakthrough inning in the fifth where they scored six runs off of five hits and one Eagle error.

Defensively in the fifth, Kayla Bousquette was relieved with two outs by Jennifer Morninishi after two hits and a run scored off Bousquette (3-1). Morinishi walked the first batter she faced and then an Eagle infield error would extend the inning and allow two runs to score, 5-1. The Penguins capitalized on their opportunity to provide some additional insurance runs and strung together three singles to score two more runs, 8-1.

The Eagles did another pitching change to switch up the momentum which brought DJ Symons into the circle. Symons maintained her composure and struck out the next batter to end the inning and send her team to offense.

Biola would record a scoreless fifth, but rally in the sixth. McClinton led the inning by getting hit by the pitcher and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hailey Paull then pinched hit and walked to give the Eagles two runners with no outs. Raylene Roybal continued the inning with an infield single to load the bases.

McClinton scored as an result of the next at-bat (8-2). Kaitlyn Hawkins hit a fielder's choice to second which was fielded up the middle and resulted in the second baseman tagging her bag for the first out of the inning.

Next Loren Meza pinched hit and executed an excelled piece of situational hitting with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Paull, 8-3. BU scored one more run before the inning concluded, Brie Nowak doubled down the left field line to score Hawkins, 8-4.

Symons then tossed another great inning for the Eagles where she allowed no hits and struck out two batters to quickly get her team back on offense.

BU continued to fight in the seventh, inflicting back-to-back singles from Morinishi and McClinton with one out. Dominican then slowed the pace down by making a strategic pitching change. DU put Shelby Keltner in the circle who successfully kept the Eagles off-balanced in the first game.

And Keltner continued to deal, striking out two batters to end the inning and successfully hold the Penguins lead 8-4.

Both teams will rest tomorrow as consistent rain is on the forecast and be back at it again on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 12 and 2 p.m. at Freedom Field.
