Game Recap: Softball |

Eagles Split with Setters

The softball team split their doubleheader with Pace University, winning an exciting first game in extra innings and then fell short in the second.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola softball team started the day with an exciting win over Pace University, but would fall in their second game to the Setters.

Game 1 - BU: 2 / PU: 1
Biola scored immediately with a run in the first inning. Colby McClinton continued her hitting streak to 24 games with a deep double to right center. Jennifer Morinishi then executed a great piece of situational hitting by laying down a sacrifice bunt that advanced McClinton to third.

Abie Nowak came up next and singled down the right field line to score McClinton and put BU up, 1-0.

Biola and Pace would go on for four scoreless innings until Pace tied it up in the top of the fifth. The Setters scored one run off of one walk, one hit and one Eagle error which knotted the game, 1-1.

And that one hit was the only hit Raylene Roybal allowed as she was dealing in the circle.

BU and PU would battle it out into extra innings where Biola eventually walked it off in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, McClinton got on base by a Setter error. Morinishi advanced McClinton to second and Abie Nowak did it again, scoring McClinton with an RBI single to walk off the game.

Roybal was locked in on the mound, throwing two 1-2-3 innings and lasered in four strikeouts in the Eagles' 2-1 victory.

Game 2 - PU: 7 / BU: 4
After an exciting, closely fought first game, the second part of the day's doubleheader got off to a slow start as two scoreless innings passed for Biola and Pace.

But Pace University would soon break the silence with an offensively productive third inning. The Setters got some momentum going in the top of the third where they strung together four hits and a walk off Kayla Bousquette to jump to a 2-0 lead and force a BU pitching change.

DJ Symons came in to relieve Bousquette with two outs and two runners on base. Symons walked her first batter to load the bases and then gave up a two-run RBI single which put PU up, 4-0. Symons quickly regrouped and forced the next batter to ground out to get out of a tough third inning for the Eagles.

Pace would further their lead in the fourth inning, scoring one run off of one walk and a two-out double which gave the Setters a confident 5-0 lead over the Eagles.

Biola finally found the gaps in the Setters' defense and scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth, 5-1. Alexis Lara got things started with a one-out single and then showcased her speed with a stolen base to advance to second. Cami Lara then clutched up with a huge two-out RBI single to put the Eagles on the board. However, Pace would find their way out of the inning which left Biola chasing the Setters by four runs.

Unfortunately, the Setters would match Biola's run in the top of the fifth which extended their lead 6-1. Kylee Messmer relieved Symons and allowed one run to score off of a lead-off walk and base knock up the middle.

Biola had a scoreless fifth inning, but turned things around in the sixth. Rilee Ruvalcaba jump started the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pace then recorded the next two outs, but Cami Lara continued the inning by wearing the next pitch which put runners on the corners for pinch-hitter Allie Medrano. Medrano continued the rally by working a walk and loading the bases for McClinton. McClinton did what she does best, stepping up when it matters the most, and hit a hard ball off the left center wall which translated to a three-run double and closed the gap, 7-4.

After a single by Morinishi, the Setters recorded their final out which held Biola to 7-4.

Morinishi then closed out the game on the rubber for Biola on defense. She polished off the sixth and seventh innings, allowing no runs to score.

Despite a great team effort, the Eagles were unable to surpass Pace in the bottom of the seventh and ended losing 7-4 to the Setters.

Biola plays next against No. 12 Concordia on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 12 and 2 p.m. at Freedom Field.
