Big Blast Not Enough

Biola hits its first homerun in nearly two months, but leave more runs on the table in 8-3 loss.

CARSON, Calif. — For the 14th time this season Biola Softball notched double-digit hits against their opponents, but unfortunately for BU, the team also suffered its 14th loss of the season in this same effort.

The Eagles were swept by No. 23 CSU Dominguez Hills after posting an 8-3 loss in the nightcap at the Toros' place.

A two-run homerun by Abie Nowak was an exciting moment for BU right off the bat in the top of the first inning. It was the first Biola big fly since way back on February 10th.

That big blast allowed BU to stake a 2-0 lead and feel confident right away with its ace headed to the circle in the bottom half of the first. The host school was prepared though, as they had eight-consecutive batters reach base following a leadoff groundout. This offensive consistency forced Raylene Roybal out of the game and allowed CSUDH to charge ahead 5-2.

Both teams were blanked in the second and third innings. Biola had runners in scoring position in each of those frames, but it could not scratch anything across against an Ashley Wies who was settling into the circle.

Jennifer Morinishi was the steadying force for Biola in relief. She posted three full innings of relief with no runs allowed.

The Eagles used singles from Camila Lara, Rilee Ruvalcaba and Alexis Lara to squeak one across in the fourth inning and get it back within two runs. For the third-consecutive inning though Biola stranded a pair of runners when the last out was made.

A pair of walks and a pair of singles allowed CSUDH to extend the lead by one run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3. Biola's offense seemed primed to answer right back in the sixth as Bridgette Trujillo walked to lead off the frame and then Ruvalcaba fired up the dugout with a screaming double.

It looked as if a sacrifice fly by the Eagles' leadoff hitter would erase that extra run from CSUDH's fifth inning. But, a strong throw home from Alex Davis in center field nabbed Trujillo and allowed the Toros to turn a two on, no out situation into a one on, two out moment.

The Eagles stranded Ruvalcaba and then the Toros tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth to make the battle even bigger. For the first time in the game, Biola was held without a hit in the top of the seventh inning.

Colby McClinton and Nowak both went 2-for-4 and played a key role in the run production there was for BU. Ruvalcaba reached base each time she stepped to the plate, but in the end Biola dropped its ninth game in the last 10 times out.

The Eagles fall to 17-14 overall while CSUDH improves to 20-9. The opposition is just as tough for Biola on Saturday as they return home to host No. 19 CSU San Marcos (18-11). The Cougars also played today, dropping a pair to Concordia University Irvine (3-2, 6-0). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
