Eagles Fall, McClinton Sets Record

The softball team lost two to Azusa Pacific and Colby McClinton holds the record for longest on-base streak in Biola Softball program history.

AZUSA, Calif.--- The Biola softball team lost both games today against rival Azusa Pacific at the Cougar Softball Complex.

The first was a close 2-1 battle and the second was a hard 8-4 loss to the Cougars.

Colby McClinton broke the record for the longest on-base streak in Biola Softball program history, recording at least one hit in all 29 games this season. The previous record holder was Andi Hormel who reached 27 games.

The Eagles (17-12, 9-7 PacWest Conference) outhit the Cougars (17-14, 9-9 PacWest) 19-10 combining both games, but Azusa Pacific had better luck with making the most out of their scoring opportunities. BU left 19 base runners stranded on-base while APU left 14 throughout the day.

Game 1: APU 2 / BU 1
Azusa Pacific scored a run in the first and fourth innings which gave them an early two run lead, 2-0.

Biola cut their lead in half in the sixth inning. Jennifer Morninishi walked to lead off the inning and was advanced to second by Abie Nowak who singled to left field. Raylene Roybal kept the momentum going with a RBI single up the middle which gave the Eagles their run of the inning, 2-1.

BU fought to tie up the game in the seventh. The Eagles first two batters got on base which made it interesting. Brie Nowak worked her way on base, benefiting off a Cougar error and Alexis Lara advanced her to second with a single to right field.

However, Azusa Pacific would come up with the next three outs to secure their 2-1 win.

Raylene Roybal tossed the first game where she only allowed APU three hits and one earned run in Biola's 2-1 loss. Roybal also struck out five Cougars in a strong pitching performance.

Game 2: APU 8 / BU 4
The Eagles got off to an optimistic start where they put up three runs in the first inning.

Biola strung together four-consecutive hits to give them a 3-0 lead. Morinishi singled to get the inning started. Lara picked her up with a single to left which gave BU runners on first and second. McClinton then smacked a double down the left field line which scored one run, 1-0. Abie Nowak continued the hit fest with a single to right field which cashed in Lara and McClinton, 3-0.

Azusa Pacific came back with a run in the first and third innings to make it a one-run game, 3-2.

Biola would further their lead in the fourth inning by scoring a run which Azusa Pacific matched in the bottom of the fourth, 4-3.

However, a big four-run inning from the Cougars in the fifth inning would push APU to a 7-3 advantage that they would extend to 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth where they scored another run.
Biola battled to make up the difference, but would be held scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings by APU.

The Eagles' had four pitchers come into the second game. Kayla Bousquette got the start and was relieved in the fourth inning by DJ Symons and then Morinishi. Morinishi threw into the sixth inning where she was relieved by Roybal who closed the game.

McClinton batted 4-for-4 in the second game with one double and three singles. Kaitlyn Hawkins also batted above .500 with two singles.

Biola loses five points in the Cornerstone Cup standings which leaves BU in the lead 60-50 in the overall rivalry series.
