Eagles Take Down No. 2 Toros

An all around great team effort allowed the Eagles to take down the No. 2 Toros 4-2 at the Concordia Kickoff Classic.

IRVINE, Calif.--- The Biola Softball team took down the NFCA's second-best team in the nation, Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-2 at the Concordia Kickoff Classic held at the Great Park Sports Complex.

"This was a great team win for us," exclaimed head coach Kristin Halte. "Our theme is togetherness and we really felt like we played together today. We had pitching, defense and clutch hitting."

The Eagles clutched up in the bottom of the third with a breakthrough inning. Alexis Lara led off with a single to the left side and was pushed over to second by Bridgette Trujillo who hit a fielder's choice to third base. With one out, redshirt junior Rilee Ruvalcaba smacked an RBI single to center that cashed in Lara for the Eagles first run (1-0). And with the momentum flowing Biola's way, Jennifer Morinishi continued the productivity by laying down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Ruvalcaba to scoring position.

Freshman Colby McClinton came up next with a huge two-out single that scored speedy Ruvalcaba from second, putting Biola up 2-0. Abie Nowak kept the two-out rally going with a triple to deep left center that scored the Eagles third run of the inning, 3-0. The Toros began to feel the pressure and committed an error that scored Biola's final run of the inning, 4-0.

The damage was done, but Cal State Dominguez Hills continued to fight and pushed across a run in the fourth and sixth innings which closed the deficit they were chasing 4-2.

Raylene Royal started in the circle and threw until part way through the sixth inning where Morinishi came in to close out the game. Morninishi came in the sixth with one out and runners on first and second. McClinton made a quick play, fielding a line drive at shortstop which she converted into a double play by successfully catching the Toros second base runner by surprise.

After averting a dangerous top of sixth-inning, the Eagles continued to lead 4-2 but still had to defend one more inning to take home the win.

The Toros were given an early advantage in the top of the seventh when their first batter walked. The Eagles stayed collected and came back with another big defensive play. Morinishi fielded her position on the mound by turning two on a hard grounder. McClinton received the ball at second and quickly fired the ball to first for another double play. With two outs, Morinishi carefully worked her count and ending up striking out the next batter to secure Biola's 4-2 victory.

Roybal and Morinishi teamed up on the mound to toss an incredible game. Royal allowed just six hits in six innings and only allowed two runs to score. Roybal was efficient in producing outs, recording  11 groundouts, three flyouts and one strikeout. Morinishi received her first save, coming in the middle of the sixth and efficiently shut down Cal State Dominguez Hills' scoring in Biola's 4-2 win.

Biola improves 2-0 overall and plays again at 4 p.m. against Colorado Christian at the Concordia Kickoff Classic at the Great Parks Sports Complex.
