Game Recap: Softball |

Everybody Hits!

Six Eagles combine for 11 hits as Biola outlasts Chaminade for a daily sweep.

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Game two did not go quite as smoothly as game one did, but Biola Softball did what the top programs must do - they came up with the big plays when they were absolutely needed. Coach Kristin Halte's Eagles held on with all their might to escape Silverswords Field with a 6-5 victory in Friday's finale.

Unlike the opener, Biola did have to overcome a Chaminade lead in this contest. The hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the first to make a statement early on that proved they'd be competitive this go-around.

It was a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch that allowed the home team to load the bases with just one out in the game's opening stanza. A single rapped into left field was followed by a third walk to force home those two opening runs.

Biola didn't wallow in self-pity following that challenging start. Rather, the Eagles came out firing the very next inning. A Kaitlyn Hawkins single is what started the Eagles' offensive attack in that second frame. She was moved along by Alexis Lara and then touched home plate when Bridgette Trujillo turned one around for a single into the outfield.

That would be it for BU in the second, but they were far from done in the game's middle innings. Kayla Bousquette was able to overcome surrendering a one-out double for a relatively routine bottom of the second before the Eagles' lineup put the team out in front with a three-run third.

Singles by Raylene Roybal, Colby McClinton and Brie Nowak equated for two of those three runs, but the big hit of the inning came from Hawkins once again. The Eagles third-baseman found her way to familiar territory when she scored Nowak with a big two-out bases-clearing triple to make it 4-2 in favor of the Eagles.

Triples were all the rage in this game, as Chaminade managed two of their own just one inning later. The Silverswords three-baggers came back-to-back from their No. 1 and No. 2 hitters in the lineup and set up a two-run fourth inning that allowed CUH to knot the game at four.

There was a brief break from scoring in the fifth inning before Biola managed to pull back out in front in their half of the sixth. A Jennifer Morinishi sacrifice fly gave the team a 5-4 lead, and then a single from McClinton allowed Trujillo to touch home and score what would be the game's winning run.

The top of the lineup for Chaminade managed to get one run across in the sixth, necessitating Halte making a pitching switch to bring Raylene Roybal in from the outfield. Roybal came in with the game-tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, but she managed to roll a groundout to end the inning and keep BU out in front by a hair.

Despite a leadoff triple by Roybal in the top of the seventh, Biola could not get her across for added insurance. Instead she trotted back out to the circle to get the last three outs with the narrowest possible lead.

After the lead-off batter was hit by a pitch, Roybal and the Biola defense really had to dig in. There was a fielder's choice that allowed BU to nab the lead runner at second base for the first out. Then, there appeared to be a groundout to third for the second out which allowed a runner to move into scoring position.

However, as it turned out, Biola's third-baseman was not officially in the game (yet) at that point after having been pinch-run for. So, the play was called back and the batter was given another chance.

This time that batter flew out to right field, keeping the runner stranded at first base and still making the second out. A popup to the shortstop would be the game's final out and allow DJ Symons to pick up her first collegiate pitching victory while Roybal got save number two on the season.

Roybal was 3-for-4 in the game and Hawkins was 3-for-3. Six different Eagles touched home plate to help lift the team to a second PacWest Conference win on the season. BU sits alone in first place in the league after day one as no other PacWest games have been played yet.

These two teams play another doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 2:00 p.m. pacific time/12:00 p.m. hawaiian time. Catch those games live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/chaminade/.
