A Close Call

Biola was right on the edge against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps but were unable to overcome.

FRESNO, Calif. --- The opening of the Fresno State Invite left a sour taste in the mouth of the Eagles (3-7) with a loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-2). The game had the slimmest of margins but a second half slip led to a 12-9 loss for Biola.

Back and forth the scoreline went throughout the majority of Friday's contest. Biola and CMS kicked off the weekend festivities at the FSU Invite at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

The Eagles were the first to score, hitting the back of the net just over one minute into the contest.

From there, the two teams traded points like a hot potato. For every Biola goal there was a CMS goal in return, leading to a 6-6 tie at the half.

Kourtney Pyle opened the game on fire. The junior collected all four BU goals in the opening quarter, nabbing one for each minute for nearly four minutes. The four goals for Pyle were split evenly with two in even strength and two on powerplays.

The first 13 minutes following halftime were crucial for the CMS separation. A 2-1 third quarter and three-unanswered goals in the fourth put the Eagles behind by four with under three minutes to go.

Veralie Naranjo and Maria Roldan Gonzalez went back-to-back to give the Eagles one final push before the final buzzer. Two goals within a minute of each other cut the deficit to 11-9 with the final 90 seconds looming.

CMS quieted the drama with a goal of its own, pushing its lead back to three and out of reach.

Lizzy Birch and Naranjo picked up a pair of goals each on the day. Naranjo made an all-around impact on the offense, pairing two assists with her two goals.

Damaris Kientz locked it down in goal with 15 saves through 32 minutes of play.

Biola will return in the Fresno State Invite on Saturday, facing No.10 Fresno State at 1:00 pm and No. 17 UC Davis at 5:00 pm.
