Eagles Soar Past Sunbirds

The Biola University men’s soccer team soared past Fresno Pacific Thursday night with a 6-0 victory at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola men's soccer team was flying high Thursday night at Al Barbour Field, cranking out a 6-0 victory against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds to kick off conference play.

The Eagles improve 2-3-3 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest while the Sunbirds fall 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest.

"The guys are always up for matches but there is a little bit of extra motivation when it comes to conference play because every game counts in a big way," said head coach Joey O'Keefe.

O'Keefe continued, "Over the past four games, their confidence and motivation has grown. We are playing less nervous and becoming more brave."

The Eagles took home a great win and ended up breaking a school record. The 2022 men's soccer team set a new Post-NCAA DII Single Season record for the most goals in a single game, replacing the 2017 men's soccer team who scored five goals against Dominican. This record isn't too unfamiliar to O'Keefe who was a player on the Pre-NCAA DII Single Season record holding team that had a whopping 15 goals against Pacific Union in 2012.

Six goals and six different Eagles scored tonight, including Aidan Hill, Clement Michelet, Moritz Riegel, Kristian Colaci, Matteo Napoletano, and Samuel Skartnes. Three of these Eagles scored their first goals of the season.

"We had some different guys score goals tonight and I expect those guys to continue scoring goals," commented O'Keefe. "We are playing free and confident as a group."

Biola divided their goals evenly in the first and second halves.

In the first frame the Eagles scored in the 3rd, 10th, and 44th minutes.

Hill got the party started in the 3rd minute with a header to the upper left portion of the goal. Colaci came up from the left side and sent a cross to an open Hill who caught the FPU goalie off-balance, driving in BU's first goal (1-0).

Colaci collected another assist in the 10th minute when he set up Michelet who knocked in their second goal (2-0).

From then, Biola buckled down and searched for their next opportunity. And one would come their way with a minute remaining in the half. Riegel sent in his first goal of the season with the help of Skartnes who tallied an assist (3-0).

The half time break didn't deter the Eagles who came out hungry, scoring three more goals.

Colaci got the second half scoring started with a goal in the 51st minute, which was his eighth goal of the season. Colaci currently has their third most goals in NCAA Division II, chasing one goal from the current second place holder.

Biola's next two goals were in the 67th and 85th minutes. Napoletano had a breakaway in the 67th minute which led to him sinking in his first goal of the year.

The last goal was a team effort by Biola's Samuels. Samuel Vandegrift found Samuel Skartnes who faked out the Sunbird's goalie and drove home the final goal of the game (6-0).

Goalkeeper JD Gunn executed another solid performance, picking up five saves and his second shutout of the season as BU's anchor.

Biola plays next against Academy of Art in San Francisco, California. The Eagles will face the Urban Knights on October 6 at 1 p.m.
