Stuck in the Sixth

A chaotic and controversial sixth frame made the difference in game two, as Concordia pulled off a 13-5 win over Biola.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola (14-18)had control with five runs in the fourth but the seven inning affair got away from the visiting Eagles with a wild sixth inning. Concordia (19-17-1) pulled off the Saturday split with a 13-5 final over BU at Eagles Field in Irvine, California.

The first scores of the game came in the fourth with a big five-run rally from Biola. Wyatt Duncan and Bobby Brown posted back-to-back doubles to get the inning moving. Brown nabbed two RBI, scoring Rylan Greenlee and Duncan.

Two outs did not slow the push, as Rhett Stein kept the inning alive with a single. The base hit allowed Brown to touch home and brought Matthew Nyce to the plate. The No. 9 hitter took the second payoff pitch he saw and sent it over the fence in left-center for a two-run shot. Five runs kicked off a 5-0 lead for BU halfway through the game.

The big inning proved to be the lone runs for Biola in the contest. The offense was a team effort but couldn't string together hits outside of the fourth, as all nine starters picked up at least one hit in the contest.

CUI cut down on the BU lead in the fourth and fifth but the BU Eagles maintained a 5-3 lead going into the sixth. The bottom of the sixth brought the chaos. The teams traded outs and base runners to put runners on first and second and two outs. Next up, brought a strikeout that got stuck in the catcher's equipment, which was then ruled as a dead ball. The dead ball granted first base to the CUI hitter, keeping the at bat alive for Concordia.

The second chance was all the host squad needed. Concordia tacked on 10 runs following the dropped third strike to open up a 13-5 lead that would hold through the final out in the seventh.

Gilbert Lopez earned the start for BU and maintained a strong pace. Lopez offered three scoreless frames to start the contest and totaled three strikeouts in the outing.

Biola will be back in action on Friday for Senior Day against Point Loma at Eagles Diamond, beginning at 12:00 pm.
