No No Doubt About It

Biola offense, defense and pitching dominates in 10-0 win.

BRISBANE, Calif. — Biola Softball has its sights set on winning out to conclude its regular season. The Eagles began that trek in an emphatic way during game one against Academy of Art on Thursday.

Paige Austin recorded her second no-hitter of this 2022 season as Biola exploded for a 10-0 run-rule victory over the struggling Urban Knights. It was the Eagles' 16th PacWest Conference victory and third shutout win in a row.

Austin set down 11 of the 15 out by way of a strikeout in the shortened five-inning game. She allowed two base runners via a walk and one by a hit-by-pitch, but nothing of consequence in a dominant effort coming in one of the final starts of her Biola career.

She got some run support in a big way when Biola broke out for nine runs in the top of the third inning. This turned a modest 1-0 advantage into the 10-run gaping hole between the two sides that remained as the game played out.

At the point Biola scored its 10th run, ART U had yet to have a single base runner against Austin. They'd get two runners on in the third and another in the fourth, before Austin slammed the door with three-straight strikeouts in the fifth inning.

The first run of the game was courtesy of some small ball. Leadoff batter Jennifer Morinishi drew a walk and then was sacrificed over immediately. A productive groundout to second base moved her to third with two away and then Kaitlyn Hawkins did her job as the cleanup hitter and singled up the middle to score the run.

There was no small ball going on in the big third inning, though. It was pure offensive volume that got it done for Biola as the Eagles put up eight hits in the frame. Interestingly enough, it all began with a walk from Morinishi and had another big hit from Hawkins.

Kaitlyn was the fourth batter of the inning and was the first to drive in some runs. She tripled to right-center field to drive in Allie Beck and Alexis Lara. It was a moment of triumph for Biola that came just two batters after some disappointment as the Eagles made the first out of the inning by getting tagged out at home plate.

Hawk's triple was not the only one of the inning. Four batters after her, freshman Hailey Paull stepped up with the bases loaded and still just one away. She got a three-bagger right up the middle and drove in three to take the game from 4-0 to 7-0.

The Eagles had two more hits, one walk and the benefit of an ART U error to expand the lead out to the 10-0 total where the game would come to a rest. Biola went down in order in their fourth and had just one walk in their fifth, but the damage was already done to the extent needed to end the game early.

Austin's no-hitter earned her 13th individual victory of the 2022 campaign. She's now 13-5 and lowered her WHIP to 0.707 which is the best mark in all of NCAA Division II. She also lowered her hits allowed per seven innings to 3.45, which is also the top mark in all of NCAA Division II.

The Eagles' offense scored its 10 runs on nine hits and the defense didn't make an error all game. Hawkins led the charge offensively with a 2-for-2 effort and three RBI. Seven different Eagles had a hit in a total team effort.

The win pushes Biola to 23-17 overall and 16-11 in PacWest play. Biola is 6-7 in road contests this year and looking to use this series to flip that to over .500.

Game two is going on late Thursday afternoon and the team has two more contests scheduled for Friday.
