Abie-solute Dominance

Abie Nowak has a huge day to lead Biola to a dominant sweep of ART U.

April 28, 2022

Box Score BRISBANE, Calif. — Biola Softball earned a clean sweep of Academy of Art on Thursday to begin its season finale series with a bang. The Eagles' offense had another strong effort, using four seventh-inning runs to earn a 7-1 game two victory.

Abie Nowak reached base each time she came to the plate in this one. She went 3-for-4 overall with two RBI and two runs scored. Her two RBI came on a two-out single in the third inning that brought the game from 1-0 to 3-0.

Biola's 3-0 lead was built with runs spread across second and third innings in support of game two starter Raylene Roybal. Roybal no-hit the Urban Knights through the first three innings to stretch it to 8-straight innings of no-hit ball to begin the day.

ART U would get their first hit in the bottom of the fourth, but would not get their first run of the day until their at-bat with two outs in the fifth.

The Urban Knights used a pair of walks and a fielder's choice to load the bases against Roybal, forcing Head Coach Kristin Halte to turn back to Paige Austin. The fielder's choice to load the bases was a bang-bang play at third-base where Rilee Ruvalcaba attempted to gun down the lead runner but was just late.

That lead runner would score on a wild pitch to account for ART U's only run of the day.

The score stayed at 3-1 until Biola's final at-bats in the top of the seventh. That's when Biola had its big inning for game two with the four-run output.

Alexis Lara leadoff with an infield single. She was brought home immediately as Bridgette Trujillo hit an RBI double into the gap. Then, Trujillo scored right away as Kaitlyn Hawkins took the first strike she saw right back up the middle for an RBI single.

The momentum was nearly stunted as an Abie Nowak batted ball turned into a double play eliminating the Eagles' two other base runners. But, a pinch-hit appearance from Kiana Meriales kept the good times rolling.

The senior singled to the left side to load the bases and then give Ruvalcaba an opportunity to drive some runs in. The Eagles' shortstop came through with a single to score one and an error in the outfield allowed a second run to score to bring the game to 7-1.

In the bottom of the seventh Austin would get two popouts and a strikeout to set down the Urban Knights in order and earn her second save of the year and take sole possession of first-place on the Eagles' all-time saves list.

Trujillo and Hawkins both also had multiple hits (2) as Biola piled on even more base knocks than they did in the run-rule victory in game one.

The sweep of the day brings Biola to 24-17 overall and 17-11 in league play. Roybal's 4.1 innings of two-hit ball brought her to 9-8 for the season and she continued to lower her ERA down under 2.50.

The Eagles close out the regular season on Friday with a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. doubleheader at Mission Blue Field.
