No Runs For You

Biola shuts out No. 9 Concordia for 14-straight innings to sweep senior day.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Fourteen innings, zero runs allowed.

What a day for Biola Softball on its 2022 Senior Day. The Eagles shutout No. 9 Concordia University Irvine in back-to-back ballgames to split the season series with the other Eagles.

Biola is the only team in the PacWest Conference to have a win over CUI this season, and it accomplished those wins in dominant fashion. The Eagles clinched a doubleheader sweep over CUI courtesy a 3-0 game two win on Saturday.

Raylene Roybal stepped up and answered the call in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, using an incredible mix of pitches to keep the Concordia hitters off-balance all game long.

She earned a complete game shutout to pull back to an even 8-8 on the year and out-pitched the Concordia University Irvine ace, Kaitlin Entrup. It once again brought back memories of her gutsy effort to clinch the west region championship against this CUI squad last year.

She held CUI to just four hits over the course of the game, with zero balls hit on the screws. This was mostly due to her change-up being absolute money all game long.

Before getting blanked for 14-straight innings on Saturday, Concordia came into this one averaging about six runs-per-game in their first 28 league games and had 25 home runs in those outings.

Just like in game one, Biola took advantage of some early offense in this nightcap. The Eagles put two on the board in the second inning with both runs scored being a senior crossing home plate.

Biola took advantage of a shaky outing from Entrup and the CUI defense to strike first. The key play in the two-run inning was a major mental miscue by the Concordia first baseman, which allowed the first run of the inning to score when the second out should've been made.

After a Maddie Riley single to the outfield, Rilee Ruvalcaba came up with the bases loaded and one away. She batted a ball directly at the first baseman, who had a hard time coming up with it initially, but once she got it had plenty of time to get an out at home or tag her bag for the out at first.

Instead, she looked at a few base runners and when she finally made a decision to run to the first base bag (after a long pause) it was too late to make an out. This allowed Sicili Brittingham to score the first run of the ballgame .

Ruvalcaba ended up on first, Riley advanced to second and Madison Blossey scooted to third as Biola had its sights set on blowing the game open.

Jennifer Morinishi got into on and lined it out into left field, which ended up being deep enough to allow Blossey to score and extend the lead to 2-0.

Fast forward to the fifth inning and Biola added a bit of insurance. The Eagles' inning began with what was presumed to be possibly the final at-bat at Freedom Field for Morinishi. She attempted a drag bunt, which has been a signature of hers this year, but was called out in a bang-bang play at first.

After that, Roybal stepped into the box to attempt to launch a rally to earn her a bit of extra breathing room in the circle. She laced one over the head of the right fielder and turned on the jets to make it into third base with a stand-up triple.

After a lineout, the pressure turned onto the game two cleanup hitter, Kaitlyn Hawkins. Hawk didn't seem fazed as she took an 0-1 pitch right through the hole on the left side to drive in Roybal and make it 3-0.

Roybal gave up one hit in the sixth and one hit in the seventh, but Concordia could not find a way to break the scoreless streak as Roybal racked up five strikeouts and only issued two walks.

The win pushes Biola out to 22-17 overall and 15-11 in PacWest Conference competition. CUI fell to 42-7 and now 28-2 in PacWest play.

Biola has the third-spot in the conference nearly locked up with just one league series remaining. Biola heads on the road to close the regular season, facing Academy of Art (8-39, 5-19 PacWest) on Thursday and Friday next week.
