We Fight Together

Despite the disappointing outcome, the Eagles remained encouraging and energetic through the opening round of the PacWest tourney.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Biola hit the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex on Thursday with a fervor in their opening matchup of the 2022 PacWest Tournament. The third-seeded Eagles met up against sixth-seeded Academy of Art in a close-knit battle from the start. The energy was not enough for Biola, as the Urban Knights pulled off the upset in a 4-2 final.

The last time BU and ARTU faced off, the two teams were separated by three points in a 5-2 narrow win for Biola. The even matchup played out on Thursday, as the contest lasted the longest of the four afternoon matches.

Doubles play started off tight but the early advantage came with sets of 6-2 and 6-3 from Academy of Art. Courts No. 1 and No. 3 got away from Biola, creating ground to make up in singles play.

The deficit was erased in No. 1 singles, as Colbeyshae Emery scored the first point of the day for BU. The First Team All-PacWest award-winner worked her magic for a 6-4 set one win and then added a 7-6 win for the match after a 7-4 tiebreaker.

The win for Emery marked her sixth-consecutive singles win, which began on March 31 against her opponent from today, Sofia Ragona.

A lead change occurred with the next singles finish. Mary Brascia overcame the hot day for a straight-sets triumph on court No. 2.

The opening set for Brascia featured a tiebreaker with neither player gaining the distinct advantage. The race to seven points swung back and forth, starting in BU's favor before switching to ARTU's. In the end, Brascia survived the win-by-two battle with an 8-6 win. The momentum carried over for the senior, as she capped off the match win with a 6-2 set two.

Unfortunately, that would be the final point for the Eagles, as their 2-1 lead turned into a 4-2 loss. Three straight-set finishes clinched the match for Academy of Art, allowing the Urban Knights to advance.

The end to the match, caused Lilly McNeill's singles match to go unfinished despite the intense action on court No. 4. The Urban Knights held a one set lead over McNeill but the sophomore fought through the second set to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. McNeill fought off a pair of match-points from Julia Ortega to put the tiebreaker at 8-8, before the overall match was clinched on court No. 6.

Throughout the afternoon affair both the men's and women's Biola tennis squads were relentless in their support of their teammates. After wrapping up her match, Emery gave every ounce of energy she had left cheering on her fellow Eagles in their effort on Thursday.

Biola is now set for a Friday 1:00 pm matchup against seventh-seeded Cal State LA in the consolation bracket.
