Game Recap: Softball |

Azusa Wins It Late

A two-out run in the bottom of the sixth wins a 3-2 ballgame for APU.

AZUSA, Calif. —- All game long Biola Softball was putting itself in a position for success, but it never quite came all together for BU as the Eagles drop game one at Azusa Pacific by a final tally of 3-2.

Just after Biola tied the game at two in their half of the sixth, APU managed a two-out run to pull back ahead in the bottom of the sixth and cause Biola to have to press in the seventh to try to find a win.

The Eagles got two runners on-base following a leadoff ground out with Alexis Lara beginning the would-be rally with her first hit of the afternoon. An error around the second-base bag allowed Lara to move up and Brie Nowak to reach base to give Biola two on with just one out.

Staring at a 1-2 count and trying to drive home that game-tying run Kaitlyn Hawkins managed a hard-hit ground ball to the shortstop. The Cougars went 6-4-3 to get the game-ending double play and secure the win.

It was a welcome sight for the APU supporters as the game had been a bit of a struggle defensively up until that point.

The one-run loss is a stinger as Biola sees its scheduled contests dwindling and is still fighting for position within the NCAA Division II west region.

Biola had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning and it fell by the wayside. Just after Madison Blossey drove in Allie Beck to tie the game at two Biola was in a spot where they had two runners on and just one out.

Head Coach Kristin Halte used Hailey Paull to sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third and set things up for productive 9-hole hitter Rilee Ruvalcaba. Unfortunately, similar to the play that ended the game, Ruvalcaba hit a ground ball to shortstop on the second pitch of her at-bat and saw the two runners get stranded.

Biola stranded runners on base eight times throughout this game, holding themselves to just the two runs despite getting seven hits, two walks and a few sacrifices off the APU staff.

Jennifer Morinishi had a pair of doubles in the outing, going 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot while also walking once. Blossey also had two hits.

Biola turns its attention now to game two, where it will look to split the season series against Azusa Pacific with a win.
