Biola leads for most of the game, but falls short late at APU.

April 16, 2022

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. — A fantastic start from Raylene Roybal and some consistent early offense set Biola up well for a win in game two at Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Unfortunately, the heart of the APU order found some late life and used five runs spread across the fifth and sixth innings to earn a one-run win.

Biola took a 4-1 lead, but the Eagles were held scoreless in innings five and six while the hosts scored five unanswered to ultimately claim the game by a 6-5 final score. The pair of wins secure a 3-1 advantage for APU in this year's season series and should clinch their spot as the second PacWest Conference team to make the west regionals.

Just as in game one, Biola ended this game with the game-tying run on third base. The Eagles showed some fight in their final at-bat, with an RBI groundout from Roybal pushing across run five for BU and putting Abie Nowak on third base for Madison Blossey, who had reached base three times already on the day.

Unfortunately, Blossey was retired on a groundout to third base and Sydnie Sahhar clinched a save for her Cougars by locking down the final two outs.

Roybal had a great outing for Biola, holding APU without a hit until the third inning and only surrendering one run and two total hits through four full innings.

At that point, BU managed four runs of their own thanks to a three-run second inning highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of freshman infielder Hailey Paull.

The game was tied in the bottom of the fifth inning, though, when APU got back-to-back run-producing singles from the No. 3 and No. 4 hitters in the lineup. Both of those hits came with two outs in the inning. It was an inning where APU tripled the number of hits they had previously. They had two hits in the first four inning and four in the fifth inning alone.

More two out offense handed APU their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. Olivia Smith hit a ball back up the middle off Jennifer Morinishi to plate a pair and put Biola behind 6-4.

The rest was history as Biola suffered a second-straight tough-luck loss despite piling on 11 hits, including four extra-base hits. Roybal was just as good with the bat as was her start in the circle on Saturday. She finished up 2-for-4 with one of her hits being a triple. She also scored one and drove in another.

Mornishi and Alexis Lara both also had two-hit games in this one.

The loss drops Biola to 20-17 overall and 13-11 in PacWest Conference competition. The pair of extremely narrow wins does wonders for APU who now sits at 30-14 overall and 20-6 in PacWest Conference play.

Next up for Biola is its final home doubleheader of the 2022 season. Senior Day is against the No. 7 Concordia University Irvine Eagles (42-5, 28-0 PacWest) on Saturday at noon.
