Perfect Place to Play

The Biola Tennis Center played host to 14 matches for BU women’s tennis and every one of them ended in a Biola victory this year.

LA MIRADA --- Biola remained perfect at home on Wednesday in a 5-2 defeat of the visiting Cal State LA Golden Eagles (6-8). The 14th home match of 2022 made for the 14th win at home for BU, as the team picked up its 20th overall victory of the season on Senior Day.

The last loss for the Eagles at the Biola Tennis Center came nearly one year ago when HPU came to town on April 15, 2021. Since then, Biola has notched 15 wins at home without a loss, including six shutouts.

The final home match of 2022 also meant a Senior Day ceremony for the team's two seniors. Mary Brascia and Ines Diaz were honored after the match with kind words from head coach David Goodman and assistant coach Samuel Murphy.

Both seniors found success on Wednesday with wins in singles and doubles play. Diaz cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets triumph in No. 6 singles and joined forces with Gaby Carvajal to secure the doubles point with a 6-4 set on court number three. The doubles win from Diaz marked her 16th of the season, which ranks highest on the team.

Brascia took care of business alongside Colbeyshae Emery to open the day for BU with a 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles. Singles play saw a drawn out battle between Brascia and Noa Davico, as the two needed a third set to decide a winner. Davico made the first move and went up 5-4 and 6-5 but Brascia hung on to force a tiebreaker. With her team behind her the whole way, the senior closed out the contest for a 7-6 win in the third set.

The first win of singles play came quickly from Emery on court No. 1. The decision was the first to finish by a decent margin. Back-to-back sets of 6-1 meant a straight-sets rout for Emery.

Lilly McNeill clinched the match with a three-set masterpiece. The righty overcame a first set loss with a 6-4 win in set number two and a 6-1 showing in the final set. The win marked the fourth point for BU, sealing the victory for the squad.

Four singles wins and the doubles point helped Biola to the 5-2 win and to a 20-3 overall record. The team will now shift its attention to its final regular season competition, which is set for Friday at Fresno Pacific at 2:00 pm.
