More Morinishi Please

Jennifer Morinishi walked it off on Tuesday with an RBI single, while also collecting the win in the circle.

LA MIRADA --- Game one on Tuesday went nine innings and only featured one total run between Biola (18-12, 13-8 PacWest) and Hawaii Hilo (11-14, 9-12 PacWest). The only score belonged to the Eagles thanks to a walkoff single from Jennifer Morinishi. The lefty superstar also earned the win for her pitching effort in the 1-0 BU victory.

The Eagles offense looked similar in each inning through the first four frames. Biola utilized one base hit to put a base runner on third base with two outs. The timely hit never came though, leaving the game in balance at zero apiece.

Paige Austin held up her end of the deal, cruising through five full frames and one out in the sixth. The reigning PacWest Pitcher of the Week held the Vulcans scoreless in her start on Tuesday. The righty dealt six strikeouts, while allowing just two hits on the day.

The only sign of trouble came in the bottom of the fifth, as Hawaii Hilo picked up back-to-back hits to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with just one out. Austin responded by forcing a pair of popouts to third baseman Kaitlyn Hawkins to retire the Vulcans.

On the flip side, Biola put themselves in position to score in the sixth off the bats of Sicilii Brittingham and Brie Nowak. A scenario with runners on second and third and no one out was all bark and no bite, as the Vulcans grabbed three-straight outs without allowing movement on the base paths.

The seventh, eighth and top of the ninth did not see much action. Hitters from both squads swung early in the count and the defense was able to make routine plays to keep the game moving.

Morinishi was the catalyst for the late inning defense, stepping in for relief work in the circle. The redshirt junior polished off 3.2 innings for the Eagles and refused to give up a hit or a run in her first win of 2022.

Hailey Paull provided the spark in the ninth, launching a shot to the left field wall. The clutch double put a runner in scoring position with just one out on the board. Rilee Ruvalcaba reached base with a base hit to the shortstop but the infield hit kept Paull on second. Next up, Jennifer Morinishi hit the first pitch she saw and placed it in left-center for the walkoff single.

Morinishi paced the squad from the leadoff spot, posting three hits and the lone RBI for either team. No. 9 hitter Ruvalcaba also collected a trio of base hits with three singles in game one.

Game two is currently underway at Freedom Field.
