Ninth Bites Back

Back-to-back nine-inning bouts against Hawaii Hilo had differing decisions, as the Vulcans took game two to earn the split.

LA MIRADA --- Another low-scoring affair took place on Tuesday afternoon, as game two of the doubleheader featured just four runs through the scheduled seven innings. The tie at 2-2 forced extra innings and Hawaii Hilo was the team to create the difference for a 5-2 win in the ninth over Biola.

Raylene Roybal drew the start in the circle and fought through tough innings in the opening innings. The Vulcans put together scoring rallies in the first and third frames but Roybal did well to stop each at one run and allow just one earned run between the two frames.

After the third, Roybal settled in and took care of business against the UHH lineup. The righty blanked the Vulcans for five-straight frames to hold the visitors at two until extras. On the day, Roybal delivered all nine innings for Biola with just one earned run allowed and two strikeouts.

Three singles in the fifth for BU evened the game and eventually forced the extra innings on Tuesday. Madison Blossey was first up and notched a single to center field. Rilee Ruvalcaba picked up her fourth hit of the doubleheader to move Blossey to third with one out on the board. A ground out brought the second out of the inning and helped Ruvalcaba advance to second.

Allie Beck was called upon next and answered with a single to left field. The base hit easily scored Blossey to cut the deficit in half but the throw in from left field was wild. The errant throw was perfect for the aggressive BU runners, as Beck moved to second and Ruvalcaba came home for a 2-2 tie.

The two-run frame was not enough for BU, who could not muster a run in the final innings or into extras. The team combined for eight hits in the game with Blossey and Beck each nabbing multiple hits.

Errors opened up the door for the Vulcans in the ninth. Two hits and three RBIs made the difference, giving Hawaii Hilo the 5-2 lead that would hold through the end of the ninth.

The two teams will not make up their postponed doubleheader from Monday, so the Eagles will return to action in the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California. BU's first contest will be against Central Washington on Friday at 2:00 pm.
