How Sweep It Is

Biola completes first PacWest sweep since 2020.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — With a 5-3 game two victory on Saturday Biola Softball worked its first four-game PacWest Conference series sweep since it played Academy of Art Feb. 21 - 22, 2020.

The Eagles outscored Chaminade 26-3 over the two days at Freedom Field. The combination of Raylene Roybal and Paige Austin confounded the CUH hitters all series long, with the three runs in these closing innings being the first offense all series for the Silverswords.

Roybal picked up the pitching win in this one to bring her record back to even at 6-6. She threw 4.2 innings in this one, allowing five hits and three runs.

Chaminade took an early lead with a run scratched across in the top of the first, but Biola immediately answered back with two of their own in the bottom half thanks to continued production from Sicili Brittingham and Kaitlyn Hawkins.

After Jennifer Morinishi led-off the game with a single, she was advanced as per usual by an Allie Beck sacrifice bunt and then was able to score when Brittingham singled to center field.

With two away in the first Kaitlyn Hawkins managed her team-leading second triple of the season to put Biola back on top as Brittingham touched the plate.

After the wild first inning all was relatively quiet until Biola extended its lead with two more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roybal faced just one batter over the minimum in Chaminade's halves of the inning from inning two through four.

With Roybal cruising, the offense came back to life in support of her after Abie Nowak got the fourth-inning rally going with a single. She and Hawkins traded places on first base following a functional groundout from the Biola third-baseman and then it was Bridgette Trujillo's turn.

After working a full count, Trujillo hammered one way out of the park over the center field fence to make it 4-1 Eagles. It was the freshman's fifth homerun of the season and fourth at Freedom Field.

Ultimately, those four runs would be enough to get the victory but Chaminade would do its best to threaten the Biola lead. The visitors used three hits to scratch across two runs in the fifth inning and make it a one-run game.

Head Coach Kristin Halte was forced to put Austin in relief and the Eagles' senior got a pop-out to end the inning and strand the bases loaded.

Trujillo bought some insurance for BU with a two-out, one-run double in the fifth and then Austin went the rest of the game to pick up the save, also facing just one over the minimum through the sixth and seventh innings.

Brittingham was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. She has at least one hit in five-straight appearances, going 8-for-13 over that span while driving in five runs and scoring seven times.

The sweep was exactly what Biola needed to build back up its confidence following a whole bunch of splits as of late. The Eagles are now 17-12 overall and 12-8 in PacWest Conference play. This series helped elevate BU from sixth to third in the conference standings.

The Eagles have four more contests scheduled during this 14-game home stand. So far Biola is 7-3 during the stretch. BU is scheduled to host Hawaii Hilo (11-13, 9-11 PacWest) on Monday and Tuesday this week.
