Runs In Bunches

Biola gets a grand slam and all other kinds of production in 9-0 win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Softball just about tripled its season average for runs-per-game during its game two run-rule victory over Chaminade on Thursday. The Eagles scored nine runs in five innings to sweep the doubleheader against the Silverswords, 9-0.

The offensive party got started in a big way in the third inning when Brie Nowak left the yard for the third time this season and put Biola on top 4-0 with a one-out grand slam.

That was all for the scoring in the third inning, but a pair of Raylene Roybal strikeouts and a throwdown caught stealing by Bridgette Trujillo helped the energy surge through the Biola dugout again as they headed into the dugout for the bottom of the fourth.

Roybal was hoping to buy herself a bit more insurance in the circle when she came to bat in the fourth. She led-off the inning with a single, but was erased on a ground ball from the next batter Rilee Ruvalcaba.

After the Ruvalcaba batted ball, the Eagles sent five batters in a row up to the plate who reached base. Jennifer Morinishi, Allie Beck, Sicily Brittingham and Trujillo managed back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles to take the lead from 4-0 to 7-0 in a blink.

After a pop-up made it two outs in the inning, the pressure to extend the lead shifted to pinch-hitter Kiana Meriales. Meriales stepped in with the bases loaded and two away with a chance to put Biola out ahead enough to win via run-rule.

With a 1-0 count, Meriales unloaded on a ball, pulling it down into the left-field corner to score two runs and make it 9-0.

That was enough for Roybal who went out in the top of the fifth inning and locked up the win with her fifth strikeout and then a pair of groundouts. Roybal went the distance in the five-inning contest and limited Chaminade to just four hits and no other free bases.

The Eagles had 11 hits, topping double-digits for the first time since March 10 against Concordia Irvine. Beck led the way with a big 3-for-3 evening. Sicili Brittingham had another productive outing out of the 3-hole. She was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The win moves Biola to 15-12 overall and 10-8 in PacWest Conference play. The Silverswords are now stuck at 10-10 and 8-8 PacWest.

The two sides are back at it again on Saturday with a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. doubleheader at Freedom Field.
