Six-Run Inning Sinks Eagles

Biola drops game two with HPU by a final score of 6-2.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — One bad inning made something out of nothing during game two against Hawaii Pacific on Monday.

Just 30 minutes after a Paige Austin no-hitter in game one, the Eagles were locked in another pitcher's duel in game two. The two teams were scoreless until Biola put one on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but an explosive inning for HPU in the top of the fifth changed the game.

A six-run fifth inning would lift the Sharks to a 6-2 victory in the second contest and force a split to open the two-day, four-game set.

HPU had just three hits off Raylene Roybal through the first four innings, but they found five hits and six runs in the fifth to knock Roybal out of the game and force Biola to play from behind for the first time in 12 innings of play.

The Sharks did not have a single extra-base hit in the six-run inning, and only one batted ball resulted in more than one run scoring at once. It was simply a compounding of frustrating happenings that led to the the visitor's outburst.

Back-to-back extra-base hits from Abie Nowak and Kaitlyn Hawkins allowed Biola to get one run back in the sixth, but that was all the offense could muster. Biola scored just three runs total over the 14 innings on Monday.

Hawkins was 2-for-3 and drove in both Biola runs in this one. She's now tied for the team-lead in extra-base hits (6) and third on the squad in RBI (11).

Biola falls to 12-11 (7-7) PacWest following this loss. Hawaii Pacific is very similar with a 13-12 overall mark and 7-5 record in conference play.

The two teams go at it again on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. doubleheader once more.
