No-No Doubt

Paige Austin scored her first seven inning no-hitter on Monday, as the Eagles took down Hawaii Pacific, 1-0.

LA MIRADA --- The lone hit of the day for Hawaii Pacific was a hit-by-pitch, as Paige Austin worked her way through the visitor's lineup. The no-hitter propelled the Eagles (12-10, 7-6 PacWest) to a 1-0 victory over the Sharks (12-12, 6-5 PacWest) in game one of Monday's doubleheader.

The game was played in the infield on Monday with nothing being hit hard or into the outfield. Austin went to work in the circle, forcing weak groundouts and easy popouts to seamlessly work through the HPU lineup.

Austin also kept the opposition off the field of play entirely with seven strikeouts. The seven inning no-no was the first seven inning no-hitter of her career, while completing her third shutout of 2022.

The crucial rally for the Eagles came in the bottom of the fifth. Sicili Brittingham stepped into the box first and delivered with a base hit to left field. Hailey Paull did her job next, completing a sacrifice bunt to put her teammate in scoring position. A popout followed to keep Brittingham at second.

With two outs and the pressure on, Raylene Roybal got her opportunity as a pinch hitter. The dual threat connected on the second pitch she saw and placed the ball into shallow right field for a base hit. The HPU right fielder grabbed the ball and dished it to first to try and get Roybal but was unsuccessful. The throw gave plenty of time for Brittingham to round third and touch home standing up for the game-winning score.

The hits by Brittingham and Roybal were the only two of the afternoon but the Eagles made them count with the decisive run. The rest of the BU bats found a way on with four walks, including Madison Blossey with a pair of base-on-balls.

Game two on Monday is underway at Freedom Field with the Eagles looking for the sweep.
