Extra Innings Leads To Split

Biola can't hold off APU late and lose 4-2 to Cougars in extras.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Two things became apparent following game two between Biola and Azusa Pacific softball on Saturday. The first is that Raylene Roybal has found her form and found it in spades. The second is that PacWest Conference softball delivers a really, really enjoyable product at its best.

The Eagles and Cougars needed extra innings to decide the second game, a vast shift from Biola's run-rule blowout win in game one. Roybal dueled head-to-head with APU's ace Katie Korstrom to the tune of a 2-2 score through seven innings.

The Cougars had some breaks fall their way in the top of the eight to put two runs on the board that would eventually equate to a 4-2 victory when Biola went down in order in its half of the eighth.

APU scored its four runs on 10 hits, while Biola was limited to the two runs on seven hits. Biola could not record a hit after the fifth inning though as Korstrom locked it down to ride through to the finish of this one.

Roybal had an up-and-down start to the season, but today she had her longest outing of the year with seven-plus innings in the circle. She gave up one run in the first and another in the third, but seemed to have the APU hitters off balance for a majority of her outing. She was also pitching the most aggressive we've seen her all season.

Unfortunately, after working out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth inning and then putting up a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh inning Roybal gave up back-to-back hits to start the eighth.

Paige Austin came in to attempt to keep those runners right where they're at, but a double from APU's Caitlin Decanio cleared the bases and allowed the visitors to go up 4-2.

Biola put up a groundout, pop out and flyout in their half of the eighth the game came to a close and the teams salvaged a split on the day.

Once again it was the heart of the order providing much of the production for BU. Jennifer Morinishi and Abie Nowak each had two-hit games, while Kaitlin Hawkins had the big hit for BU in the fourth inning to push those two across home plate.

That two-bagger into the right field corner drove in the pair of runs and tied the game at two, where it remained for the next three-plus innings.

The loss in game two returns the teams back to effectively right where they began the day. Both Biola and APU are just one game over .500 overall and BU trails APU by one game in the league standings. The Eagles head into an eight-game week with a 11-10 (6-6 PacWest) record.

Join us on Monday and Tuesday at Freedom Field as Biola takes on Hawaii Pacific (12-11, 6-4 PacWest).
