Poised Play Earns Victory

Another Hawaii foe resulted in another Biola win, as the Eagles took down Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles faced off against Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo on back-to-back days and collected consecutive victories. Tuesday at the Biola Tennis Center held the match against the Vulcans (2-6) and the No. 11 Eagles (15-1) picked up their 12th straight win with a 4-3 triumph.

The afternoon matchup featured streaks of points for both teams. BU fell behind early in singles play but remained poised to nab the first four points of the contest to clinch the match. On the flip side, UHH stuck it out on courts four through six for the final three decisions of the day.

Doubles play heavily favored the Eagles to start the competition. Mary Brascia and Colbeyshae Emery did not mess around, while placing a 6-0 set on the scoreboard. Ines Diaz and Gaby Carvajal came in right behind, giving up just one game on the way to the doubles point.

No. 1 singles followed the momentum, as Emery picked up where she left off. The Ventura, California native took eight-straight games to polish off a 6-3, 6-0 victory for a 2-0 BU lead.

Brascia took on Sandra Dafincescu in her singles match and trailed early on. A 4-1 deficit faced Brascia in the opening set, as she vied for her ninth win of the season. The senior battled back in the set and logged a 7-5 win. The next set stayed safely in Brascia's control, as she notched the match victory with a 6-3 second set.

With three points on the table, the Eagles needed one more point with two of the remaining matches holding BU advantages.

Ultimately, the first three singles contests fell in order. Alexandria Mann provided the clinching point for BU on court No. 3. The freshman was methodical and precise on the way to a 6-2, 6-3 straight-sets decision. Win number 12 for Mann is a team-high for BU in 2022.

With the match in hand, the final three singles matches played out with no consequence to the overall winner. Despite the loss, Hawaii Hilo stuck it out and collected those final three points to bring the final score within one. The last three results saw the end to fantastic streaks from the Eagles including a nine-match winning streak from Lilly McNeill and an undefeated record from Diaz.

Emery secured her 10th singles win on Tuesday, while extending her winning streak to seven.

The Eagles will return to action at the Biola Tennis Center on Friday with a non-conference matchup against Texas A&M Kingsville at 12:00pm.
