Making a Statement

The Eagles toppled the seventh-ranked Hawaii Pacific Sharks for their 11-straight victory on Monday.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles will not let anything stand in their way this season, tacking on their 11th win in a row on Monday. A double-digit winning streak stayed alive, as the BU squad (14-1) avenged its only loss so far in 2022. No. 11 Biola overcame No. 7 Hawaii Pacific (8-5) in a nail-biter at home.

The win for BU marked its first win against the Sharks in program history. It was also the second win of the season against a top-11 team in the nation and the first against a top-10 opponent since transitioning to NCAA Division II.

Drama ensued from the opening serves with tight battles across all three doubles matches. HPU was desperate to keep its momentum, having only lost against NCAA Division I foes entering Monday's contest. The visitors would have to try to fend off Biola without its No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, who were unavailable on Monday.

4-3 was the scoreline on each court, as the fate of the doubles point was up for grabs. HPU made the first move, notching a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot but Ines Diaz and Gaby Carvajal immediately responded with a 6-4 win of their own on court No. 3. The first point of the contest rested in the hands of court No. 1 and the Sharks managed the 7-5 set advantage to lean the match towards the visitors at 1-0.

The early deficit did not faze the Eagles. Lilly McNeill was quick to the punch for her ninth-straight singles victory. The Sharks lead disappeared with McNeill's win on court No. 4, thanks to set wins of 6-4, 6-2 for the sophomore.

No. 6 singles belonged to Diaz from start to finish. The undefeated righty notched a 6-3 set one, before slamming the door shut with a dominant 6-1 second set. Five-of-seven singles triumphs for Diaz have come in straight-sets fashion, as she remains without a loss.

With the Eagles taking the lead, the tide had turned and fortune favored Biola. Alexandria Mann (6-4, 6-3) was the next to spell success for the hosting squad. Another straight-sets win came in on court No. 3, as the freshman cruised in her 11th victory of the year.

A 3-1 advantage meant one thing to Biola: one more point for the victory. The next point would clinch for the Eagles and it was a race to see who would provide it. Brooke Fager won the race, capping off a 7-5, 6-4 straight-sets match from the No. 5 spot. The match-clincher brought jubilation and celebration for her and her teammates, as they improved to 14-1 on the year.

The final two matches still played out, despite the outcome being resolved. A third-set went the way of the Sharks on court No. 2, bringing the score to 4-2 with one match remaining.

Colbeyshae Emery was in a battle, overcoming a 0-6 set one to stay in the thick of it. The second set saw the Ventura, California native keep in front and finish ahead at 6-4. The third and final set was highly contested, as Emery held a narrow edge at 6-5. HPU's Marleen Tilgner stepped up and stole the next game to force a seven-point tiebreaker. Back and forth they went as Tilgner grabbed the first match-point opportunity at 6-5. Not to be outdone, Emery collected three-straight points to put an exclamation point on the big 5-2 win for Biola.

The grind continues for Biola with a match against Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday at the Biola Tennis Center, beginning at 1:30pm.
