Not Our Night

Biola doesn't give in, but doesn't get enough in a 13-8 loss to Sonoma State.

IRVINE, Calif. — Biola Softball battled to the bitter end as it closed out the CUI Kick-Off tournament on Saturday afternoon. A three-hour marathon ended in favor of Sonoma State in a 13-8 slugfest of sorts.

Both teams had some defensive difficulties in a contest where the two sides combined for seven errors in the game. Ultimately, an early start to scoring for Sonoma State made the difference in their ability to hold on for the five-run win.

Kylee Messmer got the start for Biola and was charged with three runs surrendered in a third of an inning. The Seawolves' offense was active from the get-go, piling on 17 hits in this one against Biola's trio in the circle.

They scored at least one run in every inning except for the third and seventh as they built the 13-run total. It's the most runs Biola's surrendered in one regulation game since a 14-0 loss to Hope International in April 2017.

Despite the runs piling on early and even staring at a run-rule scenario heading into the bottom of the fifth, Biola never quit and made for a competitive final few innings. The Eagles started the game down 7-1, scored three in the fourth inning to get back within three and then saw SSU answer with a five-piece in their half of the fifth to make it run-rule territory.

Biola's bats answered the call in their half of the fifth with a bit of two-out offense. Abie Nowak had a one-out single and came around to score two batters later as Madison Blossey turned a 1-0 pitch into an RBI double. Blossey herself would then score on a ball batted to left field and bobbled and all of a sudden the Eagles had a breath of new life, down just 12-6.

An error to begin the top of the sixth would come back to hurt BU as that base runner came around to score unearned via a two-out bases loaded walk to push it back to 13-6.

Still not done, Biola would add two more to its tally in the bottom of the sixth via back-to-back sacrifice flies from the Nowak twins but it'd turn out to be too little, too late.

Biola would have 10 hits of its own, which is a new season-high for them. A bulk of the production came from a mix of outfielders/pitchers as Raylene Roybal had two hits and scored twice and Jennifer Morinishi had two hits and an RBI. Blossey also finished with two hits to cap a strong day for her.

The loss will sting for a minute, but Biola can be proud of its three-win opening weekend and look forward to a nice four-game homestand this coming week. Next up for the 3-2 Eagles is a pair of games with Westcliff at home beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
