Nowak Bomb Keys Comeback

Biola scores five in the last two innings to win 5-2 to open conference play.

HAYWARD, Calif. — Biola Softball used some late scoring to sidestep disaster at the very start of their eight-game NorCal road trip. The Eagles came from behind in game one against Holy Names to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 victory using their final six offensive outs.

Pinch-hitter Sicili Brittingham started the rally for Biola as she picked up just the Eagles' second hit of the game to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Her effort was followed by a Jennifer Morinishi single and then a one-out three-run bomb from Brie Nowak to put Biola ahead 3-2.

That would be it for the Biola offense in the top of the sixth, but they'd get back to the bat rack quickly following a perfect bottom of the sixth from a locked-in Raylene Roybal

Once again back-to-back base runners reached to lead off the inning for BU in their half of the seventh. Kaitlyn Hawkins got the effort going with a single and then Madison Blossey reached on an error by the third-baseman, allowing runners on the corners and nobody out for the Eagles as they sought insurance.

Allie Beck grounded the ball to first base, where HNU surrendered the run in favor of getting the first out of the inning at second base. A sacrifice bunt moved Beck on to second base, but then the small ball stopped as Morinishi crushed a double to move the Eagles' leadoff batter across home plate to make it 5-2.

That was it for the scoring for Biola, but five runs on five hits over those last two innings would prove to be enough support for Roybal who put up her best outing of this young season in the conference opener.

Roybal allowed two two-out hits in the bottom of the seventh to allow HNU to reach up to 11 hits in the ballgame, but the runners never advanced further than second base as the redshirt sophomore completed the game and earned her second pitching victory of 2022. She gave up double-digit hits, but she had solid command throughout the game to work four strikeouts with only one walk.

Morinishi went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the offense for Biola in this one. It was her sixth multi-hit game of the season. This was Nowak's second big fly of the season and the three RBI helped her take the team-lead in that category as she got up to eight on the year.

This one game one of a four-game set at HNU. The second game of Friday's doubleheader should begin just before 3 p.m. at Chabot College. Follow the game live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/hnu/.
