Wild One

A pair of six-run innings and a bunch of wild pitches makes for interesting game two.

HAYWARD, Calif. — One bad inning led to a loss in the nightcap for Biola as Holy Names put up a six spot in the bottom of the second inning to build its way to a 8-6 victory, splitting day one of the two-day set.

The Hawks chased Kylee Messmer with five-consecutive singles to begin the bottom of the second and build a quick 3-0 lead with no outs in the frame. Jennifer Morinishi came into the circle to try and batten down the hatches, and she was able to get two quick outs without allowing another run. Unfortunately, the third out was too much to grasp and a three-run shot doubled the HNU advantage before the end of the frame.

Holy Names picked up one more run in the third inning by taking advantage of back-to-back wild pitches to build out to a 7-0 lead.

Biola was unable to answer until its half of the sixth inning when it managed to make a big dent with its own six-run frame. Similar to the Hawks' production back in the second inning, having two outs in the frame was not too much trouble, as all six runs scored with the BU backs against the wall and just one out to give.

After recording two outs, the Eagles got singles from Rilee Ruvalcaba, Madison Blossey, Bridgette Trujillo and Abie Nowak to help build towards their six runs. Trujillo had the big hit as her single to center cleared loaded bases and earned her three RBI as she reached third base via an outfield bobble.

The big inning got Biola back within one, which started to harken back to the late comeback from game one.

This script would not repeat itself, though, as the Hawks extended back out to two runs advantage in the bottom of the sixth via another wild pitch and then set Biola's batters down in order in the top of the seventh.

Biola put eight hits on the board and avoided any errors in the field, but the wild pitches were a big challenge for BU in this one, as they had four errant deliveries in this one, including three leading directly to a scored run.

The loss drops Biola to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in PacWest Conference competition. Holy Names improves to 3-10 (1-1 PacWest). The two teams are back at it Saturday with another conference doubleheader. This two-game set will be at Dominican's home field in San Rafael, California at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
