Biola has a tough time pushing home runners in scoring position and suffers 2-1 loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Well, Saturday's game one between No. 3 Biola and CSU Monterey Bay played out exactly as anticipated when deciphering the matchup on paper. It was destined to be a low-scoring affair with a CSUMB staff coming into this one yet to allow an earned run over the course of five games and a Paige Austin coming in who'd allowed just one earnie in her first four contests of the year.

The contest ultimately made its way to extra innings with both sides only able to get a single run across in regulation. Both teams had chances in the one extra frame, but it was a two-out RBI single from CSUMB that lifted the visiting Otters to a 2-1 win in the opener.

Biola would end the game stranding a base runner on third base after a leadoff single was advanced to third on a pir of outs and then Kaitlyn Hawkins hit the ball hard but right at the second baseman to bring the game to an end.

Advancing runners from scoring position was problematic for Biola throughout this one, which makes the one-run extra-inning loss sting just that much more. Biola had the bases loaded and nobody out in the first inning and again in the third inning, but still managed just the one run on the scorching-hot La Mirada afternoon.

CSU Monterey Bay opened the scoring in the top half of the third inning with back-to-back hits from the top two hitters in their lineup. A two-out single up the middle didn't seem to be too harmful, but then the Otters' number two hitter blooped a lazy, looping fly ball just over the head of Allie Beck, who was playing way in in left field. That perfectly placed ball turned into an RBI triple that got CSUMB out in front.

Biola would answer back in the bottom of the third with a half-inning that was a near carbon copy of the first. Beck, Jennifer Morinishi and Abie Nowak singled back-to-back-to-back to load the bases with no outs for cleanup hitter Brie Nowak.

Nowak grounded to third base, just as she did back in the first. Just as in the first inning, the throw was from third base to home plate, but this time it was not in time and the Eagles tied the game up with Beck sliding across the dish.

Unfortunately, that'd be all Biola could manage in the half-inning as the very next play was a ground ball double play that resulted in the Otters working out of trouble.

The next four innings were silence from both sides as Austin and CSUMB's Jensen Main traded zeroes. Austin was absolutely cruising, allowing just one hit over the course of the final four innings of regulation.

Biola had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh with 8-9-1 in the order due up. Beck managed a two-out single but was stranded after a big battle from Morinishi ended up in a an inning-ending strikeout from Main.

In the eighth Austin momentarily lost her command, which has been immaculate this year. After getting two quick outs, she walked back-to-back batters and then surrendered a two-out single just out of reach of shortstop Rilee Ruvalcaba who was shading a bit too far to the right side.

The loss is the first of the year for Austin who falls to 4-1. Main improved to 3-0 and the Otters are now up to six games with just one earned run allowed in a strong start to the season. Biola falls to 5-3 and CSUMB improves to 5-1.

The Eagles had nine hits in this one to Monterey Bay's four, but the Otters had the hits when needed and that made the very marginal difference in locking down a win for the visitors.

Beck and Abie Nowak each had three hits in this one, while Morinishi added two hits of her own. Beck and Morinishi have each hit safely in six straight games now, while Morinishi tabbed her fifth multi-hit game in eight tries this year.

The two teams play again Saturday with a 3 p.m. estimated start time.
