Double The Fun

Biola sees Bridgette Trujillo hit a pair of bombs and back-to-back jacks in big win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Back-to-back jacks from Brie Nowak and Bridgette Trujillo highlighted a successful second half of a Friday doubleheader against Westcliff for Biola Softball.

Trujillo, a true freshman, actually had two homeruns in the contest and finished the day 3-for-5 with three homers, seven RBI and four runs scored in a big-time coming out party at Freedom Field.

All that offense was in support of sophomore Raylene Roybal who went the distance in a 6-0 complete game shutout victory. She held the visiting Warriors to just four hits over seven innings while striking out eight without walking a single batter.

Biola ended its day +14 in the run differential by putting up six in game two to follow its eight runs in game one. The Eagles had nine hits in the nightcap, paced by two from Trujillo and one each from seven different Eagles, including another pinch-hit hit for Hailey Paull who is now 2-for-2 this year when her number is called.

This matchup had a different flavor from game one's run-rule victory as Biola's offense was slower to get started. The Eagles were blanked in inning one and inning two, and the best early scoring chance actually came for Westcliff as they got runners in scoring position in both the second and third.

In Biola's half of the third the team was given an extra out via a two-out error by the visiting shortstop, which would prove costly. Allie Beck and Jennifer Morinishi got back-to-back singles to lead things off.

They looked in danger of being stranded as following a pop-up and lineout, a Brie Nowak batted ball was hit straight to the Westcliff shortstop. The ball stayed low and the fielder's glove did not, which allowed the ball to scoot into left field and Beck to scoot across home plate with the game's first run.

With Morinishi on third and Nowak on first that brought Trujillo to the dish and on a 1-1 pitch she helped the ball exit stage left and made it four unearned runs on the board against the Warriors in the third.

The 4-0 lead turned into 6-0 when Nowak and Trujillo went back-to-back two innings later. It was Nowak's first career big fly and her first extra-base hit of the season. In fact, the four homeruns today were homers 1-2-3 and four for Biola as a team this season.

Roybal threw a perfect sixth and seventh inning to lock in her first pitching win of the 2022 season (1-1).

Biola improved to 5-2 on the season, while Westcliff is still in search of their first win in program history (0-4).

The Eagles are back at home tomorrow for what will be sure to be a closely contested (and important) doubleheader. It's slated for a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. doubleheader for the Eagles against the CSU Monterey Bay Otters (4-1).

CSUMB is a skilled team who's only loss this season was 1-0 to Western Washington, who perennial power was a regional qualifier a year ago. The Otters were picked to finish fifth in the CCAA this season, slated just behind San Francisco State, who Biola came from behind to beat in extra innings last week.
