IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola Men's Soccer Team swept the PacWest Conference's postseason awards, claiming four of the six major honors and received nine total all-conference selections.
Biola had not one, but four PacWest Players of the Year including: PacWest Player of the Year, PacWest Defender of the Year, PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year and the PacWest Newcomer of the Year.
Kristian Colaci has headlined for the Eagles all season, leading the PacWest Conference and nation. Colaci led four PacWest statistical categories including: goal scoring (15 goals), shots (69 shots), shots on goal (38 shots), and overall points (33 points).Â
Colaci's 15 goals makes him the highest scorer in the West Region and sixth-best in Division II. He has truly been a force to be reckoned with, scoring two goals in a match three times this season.
Colaci also recorded four game-winning goals, three assists and ended the regular season with a .551 shots on goal average. Colaci was also PacWest Player of the Week twice this season.
"Kris is without a doubt the most dangerous attacking player in our conference," stated head coach Joey O'Keefe. "He brings an intensity and passion to his craft that's second to none. His teammates respect the work he puts in on the field and in the weight room. He is a pure-natural goal scorer and I wish he could represent Biola for more years."
Izaac Zausch received his second-consecutive PacWest Defender of the Year honor. Zausch is the anchor of the Eagles' defense who tallied 1,330 minutes this Fall. Zausch, a team captain, has continued to be a leader of Biola's defensive line that only allowed 18 goals in 17 games (an 1.06 goals per game average). In addition, Zausch contributed four assists and a goal against Azusa Pacific.Â
"Winning back to back is one of the most difficult things to do," noted O'Keefe. "For Izaac to earn this award is a true testament to his consistency and desire to get better every single day. He has been the most consistent player on the pitch for two years in a row. He's an inspiring player and someone that our younger defenders can aspire to replicate on the field."Â
JD Gunn is another important leader in Biola's defensive line and was recognized by the league's coaches as the Goalkeeper of the Year. Gunn started and played every minute in all of Biola's 17 matches this Fall, accumulating the team-high of 1,530 minutes. Gunn is another team captain who was crucial in the Eagles' success. Gunn recorded a 1.06 goals against average, 57 saves, and seven shutouts. He also set a men's soccer program record with a career-high of 13 saves against Concordia. Gunn helped lead a stellar defensive line that only allowed 18 goals this season in their 17 matches and was named PacWest Defensive Player of the Week twice.
O'Keefe stated, "JD played out of this world the entire season. Whenever he was called upon, he rarely ever was less than spectacular. He has set the bar for leadership in the Biola men's soccer program and is the type of young man that this university can be proud of, both on and off the pitch."
Jakob Schnitzler wrapped up Biola's individual award winners as the PacWest's Newcomer of the Year. Schnitzler came to Biola from Westcliff University and made an immediate impact on the Eagles. Schnitzler started in every match, accumulating 1,508 minutes of action. Schnitzler is a prominent member of the Eagles' defensive line that only allowed 18 goals in 17 games, causing Biola's opponents to average only 1.06 goals a game. Schnitzler also contributed offensively with one goal and four assists from the backline.
"Jakob is the epitome of raw power," stated O'Keefe. "His passion oozes out every time he touches the field. He has a bright future and is fully capable of filling the role of his graduating partner center back. I cannot wait to see the type of player that Jakob blooms into during his next two seasons."
In addition to their four Players of the Year, Biola received nine all-conference selections.
Colaci, Zausch, Gunn, and Schnitzler were named first team along with Biola's final team captain Theo Le Calve. Le Calve was only able to participate in nine matches due to unforeseen circumstances, but made his time on the field count. In nine matches, Le Calve scored five goals. Two of his five goals were game-winners against Chaminade and Holy Names. Le Calve also contributed three assists in conference play.Â
Aidan Hill was named to the PacWest's Second Team for the midfielder position. This was Hill's third year being named to an all-conference team. Hill played in 14 matches with 12 starts, totaling 898 minutes. Hill scored two goals and posted two assists, highly contributing as a member of the most offensive team in the PacWest. Hill also received PacWest Player of the Week for scoring a goal and two assists against Fresno Pacific.
Three Eagles were named to the PacWest's Third Team including: Ethan Hardin, Moritz Riegel and Haiko Hovak.
Hardin had an exciting Freshman season where he started in every match but one. Hardin had the third-most goals on his team with four, which included one game-winner. Hardin also had three assists this season.
Riegel played in 16 matches with 15 starts, totaling 928 minutes of action. Riegel scored two goals and tied for the team-high of five assists. Riegel is another crucial member of Biola's midfield who was a big contributor to Biola's offensive force.
Hovak started in all 17 matches, accumulating the third-most minutes on the team (1,456). Hovak was another key member of the Eagles' defensive line that only allowed 18 goals in 17 games. Hovak also recorded one assist in the Fall.
O'Keefe concluded, "All of these young men that made the list are incredible soccer players. But more than that, they are part of an incredible team that gets to share in the success of every individual winner. Without such a competitive and supportive roster, these awards could have never been possible. I am so proud of each of their achievements and honored to be able to coach this team."Â
