What a Week

Biola capped off a busy week with a defensive struggle with Hawaii Hilo on Saturday night.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles were warriors this past week, competing in five games at home in a six day span. Saturday saw the conclusion of the demanding week, as the Biola team (11-7, 7-4 PacWest) dropped a hard-fought contest to the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (8-6, 5-5 PacWest).

The weekend bout was a battle of the defenses with neither team surpassing 57 points on the night. Biola edged UHH in overall shooting efficiency with a 31.7 field goal percentage but the Vulcans made up for it by besting the host squad in three-point field goal percentage, 38-19.

Big runs by both teams made for a thrilling opening half. The hosting Eagles took off first, offering up a 13-0 run to take a nine-point lead. Amiah Simmons sank three-straight layups for BU, each one coming off a Biola steal and UHH turnover.

The Vulcans flipped the script, starting near the end of the first quarter. For 10 minutes of action between the first and second stanzas, the Eagles went silent on offense. The visitors made up for their ten-point deficit and pushed beyond, creating an eight-point lead of their own.

Simmons broke the scoreless streak at the charity stripe, bringing the score to 25-18 with two minutes left in the first half. The momentum changed sides for those final ticks on the clock, as BU posted eight unanswered points. Madi Chang put an exclamation point on the rally, finishing the half with a three-pointer to tie the game at 25 apiece.

Following the halftime break it was UHH's turn for a rally. After an opening bucket from Simmons coming out of the break, the Vulcans went on a 9-0 run to go ahead by seven.

Ultimately, the field goal from Simmons to start the third gave the team it's only lead of the second half. The Eagles made a run in the final quarter and cut the deficit to just two points. A long ball from Laila Walker helped bring the score to 48-46 with 1:37 on the clock. The Vulcans responded and went back up by two possessions with the final minute limiting the hopes of a BU comeback. The effort came up just short, as UHH finished as the victors, 57-49.

Aysia Johnson came to play on Saturday, coming up one rebound shy of a double-double. The graduate made an impact in every aspect of the game, tallying 10 points, nine rebounds, five steals, three assists and one block.

For the second time this year, Simmons completed a double-double, logging 15 points and 11 boards. The freshman has been a scoring machine for Biola, averaging 17.2 points per game, while compiling 17 double-digit scoring efforts.

Biola will finish off a seven-game homestand on Tuesday with a contest against Concordia at 5:30 pm.
