Battled it Out

In a dual meet at Occidental, Biola swimming and diving gave its best effort on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES --- The Eagles battled Occidental on Saturday in a dual meet and came away with a win on the women's side and one-point defeat on the men's. On the day, BU collected 17 event wins between the two teams.


The Biola women's squad stepped up for its first dual meet win this season. The team gathered 142 points to outscore the hosting Tigers by nine points. The men piled on 129 points and narrowly fell to the Tigers, who posted 130 points.

Diving began the day with 1m and 3m events. Eliana Cote shined for BU with a win in the 1m dive with a score of 251.70. The sophomore beat out four Tigers to take first place. Cote added a second place finish with a score of 238.65 in the 3m dive. Luke Hanson tallied nine points for Biola's team total with a 1m dive, scoring 148.65.

Relays found success with three four-somes notching event victories. In the 200 medley relay, Jackie Mudd, Grace Kling, Morgan Kampfer and Liza Parahnevich teamed up for a time of 1:53.13 and a first place finish in the second swimming event of the day. The 800 free relay belonged to Biola, as the men and the women each took the top spot. The men's relay team consisted of Westin Dawe, Jacob Haaksma, Matthew Trejo and Tanner Smith and the women's team was Parahnevich, Kampfer, Sofia Chavez-Varela and Kasidee Pascoe.

In the 200 free, BU was in control, notching first and second place. Chavez-Varela touched the wall first at the 1:59.71 mark and was followed by Ashlynn Griffin at 2:05.94. Chavez-Varela kept up the strong pace with another event win in the 100 free. The true freshman logged a time of 55.80 to land her third win of the day.

Pascoe also offered a big day, showing her speed in short distance races. The senior nabbed individual wins in the 50 free (25.39), 50 fly (27.89) and 100 individual medley (1:02.40). Haaskma also thrived in the short distance, finding success in the 50 and 100 breaststroke. Haaksma won both events with times of 28.19 and 1:01.08, respectively.

Ryan Monrean and Jackson Black provided a solid one-two punch to dominate the backstroke events. Monrean delivered first in the 50 back, grabbing first place with a time of 25.44. Black followed in the longer 100 back race and logged a time of 56.21 to also pick up a top finish.

Kling had herself a day with a pair of wins in the 50 and 100 breaststroke. The young talent landed ahead of the competition in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 32.28 and was followed by her teammate, Parahnevich, who finished second with a mark of 32.55. In the 100, the lineup looked the same with Kling nabbing first with a time of 1:09.41 and Parahnevich finishing second with a time of 1:10.47.

The Eagles dominated the 500 free, as the top three spots were all held by Biola. Gabe Weber led the way with a 4:52.33 time that paced the six competitors. Donatus Onu came in a second later to grab second at 4:53.58 and Dawe posted a third place finish with a time of 5:03.98.

Biola swimming and diving will return to action on January 21 at home for their final regular season competition.
