SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Another day, another top-ranked opponent for the Biola Men's Water Polo team. The Eagles started their first of two games with a 19-4 loss to the No. 5 ranked team in the nation, the Pepperdine Waves.
Biola was held scoreless during the first quarter for the first time this season as the Waves took an early 4-0 lead. Biola had a goal to hold the Waves off the board for the first four minutes of play, and they accomplished that and then some. The No. 5 Waves couldn't sneak one past Mitchell Carpenter until nearly six minutes in.
Josiah Brimmage scored the first goal for Biola in the second quarter, becoming the eighth Eagle in program history to secure a score. He was assisted by Christian Trapp.
After regrouping at the half and down 9-1, the Eagles would come back to score two goals in a back-and-forth exchange between the Waves and Eagles.
Luke Franklin notched the first of two goals in the quarter with a quickly-converted one-time shot, giving him a score in each of Biola's first three contests. Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo, BU's first goal scorer in program history, was credited with the assist as the Eagles converted with the man advantage.
Kenny Wulf scored the second goal of the third quarter allowing him to score a goal in back-to-back games. Brimmage connected with Wulf as the Eagles were able to take advantage of the Waves being down one man on the power play.
Power play was another area of focus today after a tough day man-up on Saturday. Biola converted on three of its first four power play chances.
Biola's final score of the day would come from Matthew Vinson assisted by Jonas Huckabay.
Defensively, Franklin, Wulf and Will Tibbetts each drew two exclusions while seven different eagles logged a steal.
Mitchell Carpenter saved 10 goals for a .455 save percentage. Casey Cazanjian saw action in the cage and was credited with one save.
The Eagles are back in action for their final game of the Triton Invitational as they face off against Pomona/Pitzer at 2:40 p.m. While the Sagehens are an NCAA DIII institution, they have a historically strong program and are currently receiving votes.
