Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ethan McGarvey, Assistant Sports Information Director

When it Rains it Pours

The Eagles tacked on four goals in their conference-opening victory over ARTU on Thursday night.

LA MIRADA --- Al Barbour Field held the men's soccer matchup between the visiting Academy of Art Urban Knights (0-5-1, 0-1-0 PW) and the hosting Biola Eagles (5-3-0, 1-0-0 PW) on Thursday night. BU was the team to come out on top, pouring on four goals in the second half for the 4-0 shutout.

Offense was tough to come by for either team in the opening half. The two teams combined for just seven shots with Biola offering the only shot on-target.

The best opportunity came in the final minute of the first half. A cross from the Eagles rolled to the feet of Daniel Simonis, who took his chance at the net but was denied by the leaping ARTU keeper.

The tide certainly turned, as the match shifted into the second half. "The energy we brought in the second half was so much better," commented head coach Joey O'Keefe. "We really decided to show what team we wanted to be."

In a seemingly not dangerous position, Lawrence Kwazema held the ball on the Eagles' side of the pitch in the 53rd minute. The defender took a strong swing at the ball and sent a pass along the right side to a sprinting Aidan Hill.

The All-PacWest midfielder took control of the ball and dribbled into the box undeterred by the Urban Knight defense. With just the goalie to beat, Hill sent in his first goal of 2021 for a 1-0 BU lead.

The right side continued to be the strong side for Biola, as the host squad struck again in the second half. This time, Adam Jones was at the receiving end of a through ball and delivered the incredible tally with his right foot. Theo Le Calve nabbed the assist, poking through the pass for Jones.

Accurate passing led to a third BU score, once again off the feet of Jones. The forward used his left foot to send home his second score of the match, thanks to an incredible pass from Simonis. The sophomore striker recorded his first and second goals of his career with the impressive showing on Thursday.

Up 3-0 with 15 minutes remaining, the match seemed perfectly in hand for the Eagles but still the goals kept coming. Le Calve instigated the fourth and final goal for Biola, sending in a rolling pass from 30 yards out. Izaac Zausch redirected the ball and poked it into the back of the net for his first goal of 2021.

Zausch and Kwazema impacted the offense, while contributing to the shutout effort as the center of the BU backline. JD Gunn headed up the effort as the BU keeper, improving his record to 3-1 with two clean sheets this season.

"It's always good to get your season started off in the right direction but we understand that there are so many more games ahead and there is so much more to improve on if we want to accomplish the goals we have for this season," said O'Keefe.

BU will return to action with another PacWest contest next Wednesday at 3:30 pm at Point Loma.
