SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - - Biola Volleyball (7-4,3-0) libero,
Sami Hover, recorded her 2,000th career dig on Wednesday night at Golden Gymnasium in Biola's 3-1 win over Point Loma (8-5,4-1) (26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20).
The Eagles, who improved to 3-0 in PacWest play on the season, had two players record double-digit kills while receiving a dominant performance from
Sami Hover and the back-row defense. "This was a really good team win," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Hats off to Point Loma, they weren't letting anything hit the floor and they made us work really hard for this win."
Although the Eagles were forced to play four sets, Hover liked the grit and determination she saw from her teammates after the third-set loss. "We needed to be resilient, even if it was a messy match we had to just work together to grind through it," commented Hover. "We had so many people step up when we needed them tonight."
Biola got off to a fast start and battled to close out the first two sets. After earning the first two victories, the Eagles cooled off in the third set, allowing a resilient Point Loma team to battle back to secure the third set victory. The Eagles rebounded in the fourth set to finish off the match.
Hover, who tallied eight digs in the first set and accomplished the 2,000 career dig milestone halfway through the second set finished the match with 26 digs to lead the Eagles. "It's a great accomplishment," commented Hover. "It shows the Lords faithfulness to allow me to play on such an amazing team and just enjoy the sport."
While the feat is incredible in itself, Hover's character and leadership on the team is what sets her apart from the rest. "Beyond all the digs, Sami is the heartbeat of the team and she has been for a very long time." said Seltzer. "We've had some really good characters in our program but she's at the top of the list. She's a competitor and I'm so proud of her."
The Eagles were backed by a solid offensive performance from
Abby Brewster and
Madison Beebe who tallied 14 and 13 kills respectively. Beebe added to the strong defensive performance for the Eagles, recording 20 digs on the night for a new career-high.
Brewster had what Seltzer considered to be one of her best performances of the season. "It was a full team effort and everyone came out confident after a good week of practice," commented Brewster. "We are focused on being selfless, competing, and playing for the Lord."
Vanessa Garcia continues to impress with her sixth double-double of the season recording 41 assists and 12 digs. Garcia's 41 assists on the night were just one short of tying her career high of 42 which she accomplished in 2019. The graduate student also led the Eagles with three blocks alongside the middle blocker duo of
Raegan Tjepkema and
Dani Bryant.
The Eagles are back in action at Chase Gymnasium on Friday October 1, as they host Azusa Pacific at 6 P.M.
