BU Wins Battle of the Eagles

Biola won the Saturday matchup, 2-1, over the visiting Concordia Eagles.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (4-3) took on the Concordia Eagles (2-3-1) in a non-conference matchup on Saturday night. BU defeated the visiting Eagles, 2-1, at Al Barbour Field.

The match played relatively evenly with neither team creating much separation on the stat sheet. On the night, shots and corners favored CUI (10-9, 6-2), while saves and, most importantly, goals leaned towards BU (4-3, 2-1).

The BU Eagles struck first in the 38th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick. Daniel Simonis started the attack, earning a free kick 44 yards out from the goal. The set piece was sent to the back post, as Lawrence Kwazema launched a shot that was deflected past the end line for a corner.

Simonis stepped up once again for the set piece and delivered a strike to the middle of the box. Moose Bonat was the one for Biola to make the run and get his head on the ball. Bonat made his presence felt quickly, after substituting into the match less than five minutes prior to his first career tally.

The freshman header gave Biola the 1-0 lead that would carry into the halftime break. Through 45 minutes of action, Biola edged CUI in shots (5-4) and shots on-goal (3-1) but trailed in corners (3-1).

JD Gunn came out looking sharp in goal, picking up four saves on the night. Despite Concordia vying for the revenge score after halftime, Gunn stood strong with three saves in the second half.

Biola added to its lead in the 75th minute, utilizing another set piece. The big leg of Kwazema sent a free kick from BU's own half of the field and to the feet of Israel Ortiz, who played the ball forward. Simonis was on the run towards the goal and beat the goalie for an easy score. Kwazema and Ortiz nabbed an assist on the play, giving each of them their first this season.

Concordia responded less than a minute later, cutting the Biola lead in half, 2-1. CUI placed a cross just over the outstretched arms of Gunn and to the back post for a volley goal from Alex Perez.

Up by one goal, Biola needed to hold on for 15 minutes to secure the victory. The defense did its job snuffing out CUI opportunities to keep the opponent from reaching the back of the net. On the other side of the ball, BU nearly doubled its lead with a Simonis shot that was corralled in by the diving Concordia keeper.

Biola will return to action with its conference-opener against Academy of Art at home on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
