Roybal Offers Scoreless Outing

The Eagles split a Saturday doubleheader at No. 8 CUI, as Roybal nabbed a game two shutout.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Three days following a midweek sweep over the Concordia Eagles at home, Biola hit the road for a Saturday doubleheader against the eighth-ranked squad. The two teams each grabbed one game on the day, as BU notched its 10th win in its last 13 contests.

Raylene Roybal highlighted the afternoon for Biola, tossing her third career shutout in game two. The righty led the visiting Eagles to a 3-0 victory.

Seven hits came in from the BU lineup and all seven hits were recorded by different hitters. Kayla Neff and Brie Nowak notched the two extra-base hits, as each player tallied a double in the second game.

BU broke the scoring silence in the fifth inning, after loading the bases with one out. Abie Nowak stepped up and placed a ball into the left-center gap, helping score Ruth Munoz and Allie Beck, who offered back-to-back singles earlier in the inning.

The offensive surge continued for Biola in the top of the sixth frame, as Brie Nowak smacked a leadoff double. Loren Meza took over the running duties and promptly moved to third base on a wild pitch. Kylie Velasco provided the bat to bring Meza home, soaring a sacrifice fly to right field.

Roybal was unstoppable from the circle, dealing seven innings, while never allowing a runner to reach third base. The sophomore collected four strikeouts in her sixth win of the season. Roybal seemed to get stronger as the game drew on, as she allowed just one baserunner from the fifth inning through the final out.

Game one on Saturday was a tale of two innings. CUI and BU matched each other in the opening frame, scoring one run apiece. Munoz and Neff teamed up for a two-out run, as Neff connected on a double for the first run of the day.

After Concordia's answer in the bottom of the first, the two teams remained at a stalemate, 1-1. Top-tier pitching from both squads pushed the tie all the way until the seventh inning. Paige Austin carried the torch for Biola, posting five scoreless frames with eight strikeouts.

The top of the seventh began with a bang, as Abie Nowak slapped a double down the right field line. Velasco followed suit with a double of her own to put Biola up 2-1 with three outs to go.

Unfortunately for Biola, CUI responded with a pair of huge hits. A solo homer knotted the game at two, before a three-run home run ended the contest in favor of Concordia, 5-2.

Velasco logged a great day at the plate, going three-for-six with a pair of RBI. The senior also extended her hitting streak through Saturday's doubleheader to six-straight games.

BU (14-10, 9-7 PacWest) will be back in action on Friday, April 16 at Azusa Pacific.
