BU Forces Extras in Game One Loss

A two-run sixth inning evened the game for BU and forced an eighth frame, as APU scored the 3-2 victory over Biola.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Each team grabbed two runs in one inning on Friday, forcing extra innings between the hosting Azusa Pacific Cougars and the Biola Eagles. APU ended the contest on a walkoff single for a 3-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Paige Austin carried the Eagles through Friday's initial competition, delivering 7.1 innings from the circle. The righty did not give up a single earned run through the scheduled seven innings, while compiling nine strikeouts on the day.

APU impacted the scoreboard first, posting two runs in the fourth. After placing the first two batters on base, a BU error on a popout allowed one run to score and moved another to second. A wild pitch and single led to the second score, as the Cougars collected a pair of unearned runs for a 2-0 lead.

The BU bats woke up in the sixth frame, as the visitors looked to close the gap. Madison Blossey sparked the rally with a single through the left side of the infield. Loren Meza pinch ran for Blossey and moved to second base by way of a single from Kayla Neff. Abie Nowak followed with a ground ball to the second baseman, advancing Meza and pinch runner, Haley Martinez, to second and third.

Two outs and down by two in the sixth inning, the pressure mounted as Abie Nowak came to the plate. The freshman smacked the ball back up the middle, bringing home Meza easily and scoring Martinez on a close sliding play. The two RBI hit tied the game for BU at 2-2.

The seventh inning flew by uneventfully, as neither team managed to obtain a baserunner.

Maddie Riley and the Eagles threatened in the eighth but could not take the lead. The pinch hitter drew a walk before making her way to second on a passed ball and third on a groundout. Unfortunately, three-straight groundouts ended the inning and ended the opportunity for BU.

A leadoff double and a walkoff single was all the Cougars needed to cap off the contest.

Allie Beck notched a multi-hit effort on Friday, going 2-3 in the game. An impressive day at the plate improved the right fielder's season batting average to .279.

BU moved to 14-11 on the season and 9-8 in the PacWest after game one.
