Munoz Hits Walkoff Blast

Ruth Munoz was the hero of game one on Friday, launching a three-run home run to give BU a 5-4 win over No. 11 CUI.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The visiting 11th-ranked Concordia Eagles utilized a late rally to put the pressure on BU in the seventh. Ruth Munoz delivered with a walkoff three-run home run for a 5-4 Biola victory.

A Friday doubleheader at Freedom Field between CUI and BU began without much offense, as Biola held a mere 2-0 lead entering the final inning.

The slow start did not deter the visitors, as they fought off the impending defeat with a crucial two-out rally. A solo shot and a three-run long ball shifted all the momentum to CUI, who flipped the script with a 4-2 edge, heading into the bottom of the seventh.

A swift shift in the game saw BU nearly score a shutout win, to needing at least two runs to stay alive. Kaitlyn Hawkins and Allie Beck did their part with a pair of singles with one out in the seventh inning.

Enter Ruth Munoz. The senior watched the first pitch for a strike, before sending the second pitch beyond the centerfield fence. Three Eagles touched home, giving Biola the 5-4 triumph over CUI.

In her fourth year at Biola, Munoz picked the perfect time for her first collegiate home run. In the game, the Whittier, California native was a part of four of the team's five runs, going three-for-four with two runs scored and three RBI.

Paige Austin carried the Eagles through the longest stretch of the game, painting corners for 12 strikeouts. The righty hurler kept Concordia scoreless through six frames, giving up two hits and not allowing a runner on third base in that span.

Following the Concordia outburst in the seventh, Kylee Messmer stepped into the circle to snuff the surge. One batter was all she needed to log the third out of the seventh and earn her first collegiate win.

For the second time this season, Beck nabbed two hits and two steals. The freshman outfielder went two-for-three in game one, while also posting back-to-back steals of second and third.

BU improved to an 18-11 overall record and a 13-8 PacWest mark with the victory.
