Lightning Does Not Strike Twice

Biola needed another heroic performance in the seventh inning but came up short in game two against No. 11 CUI.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Game two of Friday's doubleheader was a low-scoring affair between the hosting Biola Eagles (18-12, 13-9 PacWest) and the 11th-ranked Concordia Eagles (21-10, 10-8 PacWest). The visitors would cling to a one-run lead as the final out came through to win, 2-1 and split the day with BU.

A sixth inning score from CUI put the visiting Eagles ahead 2-1 with six outs remaining for Biola. Back-to-back doubles made quick work of the eventual game-winning run.

With zeroes going up for both teams in the bottom in the sixth and the top of the seventh, BU found themselves in a similar position as game one. A one-run deficit with three outs to go brought flashbacks to the Ruth Munoz walkoff homer that capped off the first game of the day.

The pressure mounted for BU after two swift outs but Madison Blossey gave life to the team with a sharply hit double to right center. Looking for another miracle, BU leaned in hoping for a comeback win but a strikeout would end the night for the BU Eagles.

Biola scored its lone run in the first frame, utilizing disciplined approaches to place runners on base. Blossey and Kayla Neff each drew walks to get the offense started, putting Eagles on first and second. Brie Nowak offered the crucial hit, smacking an RBI double to left center.

Blossey and Neff displayed consistency and poise at the plate, combining for five walks and a perfect 1.000 on-base percentage. BU catcher, Neff, logged three plate appearances but zero at bats, as she drew a walk in each opportunity.

Raylene Roybal notched the start in the circle, tossing three innings with three strikeouts. The sophomore gave up just one run on a long ball, while limiting CUI to three hits. Jennifer Morinishi followed in relief, mirroring most of Roybal's numbers with three strikeouts and one run allowed in four innings of work.

Biola will return to action with a road doubleheader against Concordia on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
