Another Split

For the second day in-a-row, BU and No. 11 CUI split a weekend doubleheader.

IRVINE, Calif. --- With the fate of the PacWest SoCal pod still unknown, the two Eagles squads competed in a Saturday doubleheader. Neither team gained ground, as BU (19-13, 14-10 PacWest) took game one, 4-2, and CUI (22-11, 11-9 PacWest) picked up game two, 6-1.

Ruth Munoz was the star of game one, logging three hits, including a triple to start a three-run BU rally. The senior went three-for-four at the plate with a run scored for her seventh multi-hit effort in 2021.

The fifth inning was the crucial inning for the Biola offense, as Munoz led off with a triple down the right field line. Next up, Madison Blossey also reached base by way of a hit by pitch. Kayla Neff scored Munoz on a ground ball that the CUI defender threw home but was unable to nab the speedy Munoz.

A passed ball advanced BU runners to second and third, helping BU keep the momentum going. A sacrifice fly from Brie Nowak brought in the next run, giving Biola a 3-2 lead. Abie Nowak followed with a walk, before Rilee Ruvalcaba capped off the scoring outburst with an RBI single to left field.

Ruvalcaba also put together a solid performance on Saturday. The second baseman went two-for-three with an RBI in her fourth multi-hit outing this season.

Raylene Roybal brought the game home for BU, logging the final six outs from the circle. The sophomore refused to allow a hit, while picking up her second save this year.

The win was earned by Paige Austin, who tossed the first 4.1 innings of the contest. The senior secured her fourth-straight season with double-digit wins, notching her 10th of the 2021 campaign.

BU's first run of the game came in the third frame. Allie Beck and Munoz connected on back-to-back singles to begin the rally for Biola. A CUI error helped load the bases, leading to an RBI walk from Neff.

Game two was not as favorable for Biola. Concordia was quick to take control of the action, collecting four runs in the first frame.

The host squad maintained their advantage through four innings, before adding a pair of scores in the fifth to build a 6-0 lead.

The Biola lineup came alive late but could not muster up the scoring to get back in the contest. The first sign of life came in the top of the fifth, as the team placed runners on every base with a walk and two singles. A scenario of one out and the bases loaded was a prime opportunity but BU could not find a way to break the drought.

BU catcher Neff delivered in the next frame, launching her fourth homer of the season to put Biola on the scoreboard. Kylee Messmer felt the change in tide, poking a single through the right side for Biola's first back-to-back hits of the day.

Ultimately, the Neff homer was the lone BU score, as 11th-ranked Concordia landed the 6-1 victory.

Biola will return to action next Saturday in a home doubleheader against Chapman at 12:00 pm.
