Second Inning Surge Gives BU Game One

A Kayla Neff homer sparked a five-run second, as the Eagles tackled APU, 5-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A sunny afternoon began with a Biola victory over the visiting Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Eagles piled on five runs in the second inning and went on to defeat APU by a final score of 5-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

The big rally started with a bang, as Kayla Neff launched a solo shot over the left field fence. The long ball led off the frame for BU with Neff picking up her third homer of the season.

Momentum remained with the BU bats in the following Eagle opportunities. Well-placed ground balls from Raylene Roybal and Rilee Ruvalcaba resulted in runners on first and second with no one out. APU tried to slow things down with back-to-back force outs at third.

A wild pitch and walk followed, loading the bases for the top of the Biola batting order. Ruth Munoz delivered with a hit straight up the middle, moving all runners up one base and extending BU's lead to two.

The Eagles were not done there, as Jennifer Morinishi walked to the plate. The left fielder pulled the ball into right field, easily scoring a pair BU runners. A bobble from the APU catcher allowed Munoz to score from first, giving BU a 5-0 lead at the end of the second frame.

Paige Austin and Roybal joined forces for a solid pitching effort for the Eagles. Austin notched the start for BU, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings for her eighth win in 2021. The righty hurler gave the Cougar hitters problems, allowing just one hit and three total base runners.

In relief, Roybal completed the final three frames for her first career save. The sophomore came out firing, striking out the first two batters she faced.

Morinishi's two RBI and two hits impressed in game one on Saturday. The junior added her second-straight two-hit effort with the standout performance.

BU improved to 16-11 on the season and 11-8 in the PacWest with the victory.
