Eagles Bounce Back

Game two told a different story on Friday, as Biola held on for a 7-6 victory against APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- A narrow defeat in game one did not slow down the Eagles on Friday, as the visiting squad split the day with a win in game two. BU found its offense in the back half of the doubleheader, defeating APU 7-6.

The flow of the contest seemed like a game of cat and mouse. Every time Biola would create separation, the Cougars were not far behind with an answer in the bottom of the inning.

The offensive was firing right from the jump, as Jennifer Morinishi and Madison Blossey posted back-to-back doubles to give BU a one-run lead in the top of the first. Not to be outdone, APU orchestrated a two-out rally to load the bases and score an equalizing run. Morinishi provided the highlight play to end the inning, throwing the go-ahead run out at home.

Singles defined the third frame for the Eagles, leading to the team's largest offensive output. Once again, Morinishi and Blossey teamed up for a pair of base hits, bringing home Ruth Munoz who reached by way of an APU error. Brie Nowak logged the third single of the frame, scoring the third run for BU.

The Cougars responded with just one run in the bottom of the third, moving the scoreline to 4-2.

Biola built its largest lead following the top of the fifth. Kayla Neff led off with a single and was one-upped by Brie Nowak who launched a double to right center field. Abie Nowak and Rilee Ruvalcaba notched one RBI each for a four-run BU advantage.

The routine continued with the Cougars matching BU's scoring output in the fifth. Two runs came in from the host squad, keeping APU within range with two innings remaining.

Baserunning helped score a crucial run for BU in the sixth frame. Ruth Munoz and Haley Martinez reached with back-to-back singles to start the offensive opportunity for Biola. The duo stole second and third on the same pitch and advanced an extra bag on an error from the catcher. Munoz touched home on the error, gifting BU a 7-4 lead.

Early baserunners put the Cougars in a position to respond once again. For the second-straight inning, APU tacked on two runs to cut its deficit to one run, heading into the final frame.

The lead held at 7-6 through the top of the seventh, leaving the game in Paige Austin's hands. With three outs remaining, Austin battled around a leadoff single to finish off the Cougars in four batters. The junior grabbed her second save this season and the 12th for her career.

The top of the lineup was dominant for the Eagles in game two with each of the first three hitters posting a pair of base hits. Batting leadoff, Munoz picked up two singles and two runs scored in her fifth multi-hit outing this year.

Hitting from the second spot in the lineup, Morinishi improved on her team-leading batting average of .333 by going 2-3 in the contest. Blossey offered her best performance of the season with two RBI and two hits, while batting third in the lineup.

Raylene Roybal notched the win for BU, giving the righty her seventh win of the season.

BU will host APU in its next competition on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
