BU Challenges No. 10 HPU

The Biola men’s tennis squad battled to the end with Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, falling 5-2.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- BU men's tennis mirrored the women's match on Thursday, trailing 3-0 before carrying the final four singles contest to a third set. The two teams played through every match for a 5-2 finish in the tenth-ranked Shark's favor.

Thursday's competition began with excitement, as the two teams split the first two doubles matches. Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona joined forces for a 6-4 win in the first flight for BU, tying doubles play at one each.

The doubles point would then go to the winner of court No. 2, as Erik Martinez looked to stay perfect on the season with his counterpart Sebastian Herrera. The contest was knotted at six games apiece, forcing a tiebreaker for the point. HPU was the team to come out on top, winning the opening point of the afternoon with a 7-1 tiebreak advantage.

A pair of hard-fought singles victories fell the way of Hawaii Pacific, giving the visiting team a three-point lead.

The Eagles would not go down easy, pushing each of the last four singles matches to a third set.

Alex Sedeno was the first to cash in, posting a 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 triumph from the No. 5 spot. The sophomore won his third-straight singles match, while improving to 3-0 in contests that moved into a third set.

The Sharks closed the door to the potential comeback with a clinching win on court No. 3 for their fourth point of the match.

Prokopchuk capped off the day with a grand performance, coming back from a first set loss. The standout notched a 6-4 second set, before overcoming a 5-4 deficit in the third set to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. In a battle to be the first player to seven points, Prokopchuk took the early advantage and never looked back.

A 7-4 tiebreaker gave the sophomore his ninth win this season and his first in the third set.

Biola (9-8) will be back in action for their regular season finale on Friday at home against Ventura in an exhibition.
