Biola Perseveres

The Biola women’s tennis squad scored a hard-fought win over Fresno Pacific on Monday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the fifth-straight match, the Eagles came out on top, defeating Fresno Pacific at home, 5-2. The BU team battled through tough competition, overcoming the Sunbirds for the first time in over 15 years.

"The girls played amazing," said head coach David Goodman. "Definitely our best win since coming to NCAA Division II."

The day started with the doubles point up for grabs between the two teams. The third court favored visiting FPU, while #1 fell towards Biola, leaving the No. 2 spot to decide the point. Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeill carried the torch for BU but found themselves down 4-2 in the set. With the pressure on, the duo mounted a comeback, winning four-consecutive games to grab the set, 6-4, and give BU the first point of the match.

Mary Brascia and Colbeyshae Emery opened up the singles matches strongly, posting straight-set victories. Brascia notched her eighth singles win of the year, while extending her winning streak to seven-consecutive matches.

With a pair of singles points going to Fresno Pacific, the score sat at 3-2 with Biola needing one point to clinch. McNeill and Ines Diaz were the two remaining Eagles on the court, fighting for the win.

Both players were pushed into a crucial third set, as the match remained undecided. From the No. 4 spot, McNeill secured the fourth and game-winning point for BU, dominating the final set, 6-1. The freshman improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory, posting her sixth win from the #4 spot.

Diaz quickly followed with a triumph of her own, helping Biola net the 5-2 finish.

"This team is playing with a lot of confidence and is handling adversity well," added Goodman.

The Monday victory moved BU's season record to 7-2 and the team will turn their sights to a match against Cal Lutheran on Saturday at the Biola Tennis Center.
